A glass-like material based on technology found in an ancient Sanskrit text that could ultimately be used in a stealth bomber (the material cannot be detected by radar) has been developed by a research scholar of Benaras Hindu University.
Prof M A Lakshmithathachar, Director of the Academy of Sanskrit Research in Melkote, near Mandya, told Deccan Herald that tests conducted with the material showed radars could not detect it. ?The unique material cannot be traced by radar and so a plane coated with it cannot be detected using radar,? he said.
The academy had been commissioned by the Aeronautical Research Development Board, New Delhi, to take up a one-year study, ?Non-conventional approach to Aeronautics,? on the basis of an old text, Vaimanika Shastra, authored by Bharadwaj.
Though the period to which Bharadwaj belonged to is not very clear, Prof Lakshmithathachar noted, the manuscripts might be more 1,000 years old.
The project aims at deciphering the Bharadwaj?s concepts in aviation.
However, Prof Lakshmithathachar was quick to add that a collaborative effort from scholars of Sanskrit, physics, mathematics and aeronautics is needed to understand Bharadwaj?s shastra.
The country?s interest in aviation can be traced back over 2,000 years to the mythological era and the epic Ramayana tells of a supersonic-type plane, the Pushpak Vimana, which could fly at the speed of thought.

De B-2 Spirit is een Amerikaanse stealth bommenwerper voor intercontinentale afstanden. Het toestel is in staat zowel conventionele als nucleaire wapens af te werpen. Het heeft een unieke vorm, en is uitgerust met allerlei technische snufjes (zoals speciale radar-absorberende verf) die het toestel zo goed als onzichtbaar maken en een sub-actieve stealth computer die de te verstoren radarsignalen opvangt en zo de beste ECM bepaalt.
Als gevolg van de gebruikte techniek is dit toestel, dat ongeveer twee miljard dollar per stuk kost, het duurste vliegtuig dat ooit is gebouwd. Wegens de hoge prijs zijn er maar 21 B-2's geproduceerd. De producent is Northrop Grumman.
De B-2 operationele thuisbasis is de vliegbasis Whiteman in Missouri, maar het onderhoud vindt plaats op de vliegbasis Tinker in Oklahoma.

De ontwikkeling van de B-2 is in 1978 gestart als een geheim project onder de naam Advanced Technology Bomber.[4] Twee teams van bedrijven werden aangesproken om het project verder te ontwikkelen, Northrop/Boeing en Lockheed/Rockwell. Ondanks dat het tweede team meer ervaring had met het ontwikkelen van stealth-vliegtuigen (Lockheed had toen al de SR-71 Blackbird en de F-117 Nighthawk ontwikkeld) werd in november 1981 het team van Northrop gekozen om het toestel uit te ontwikkelen. In april 1988 lekte de eerste informatie uit over het project in de vorm van een tekening. Deze tekening zou op 22 november 1988, toen het vliegtuig aan het publiek gepresenteerd werd, verrassend nauwkeurig blijken te zijn.

De B-2 bemanning bestaat uit 2 personen. Beide hebben dezelfde taken (vlieger/radar-navigator), zodat ze elkaar tijdens een missie kunnen aflossen.

Hoewel de B-2 betrekkelijk nieuw is werden de toestellen al enkele keren daadwerkelijk ingezet.
In 1999 werden door B-2?s tijdens acties boven Kosovo voor het eerst satellietgeleide JDAM bommen gebruikt.
Ook werd de B-2 ingezet in Afghanistan bij de operatie Enduring Freedom. Hierbij vertrokken de toestellen van de vliegbasis Whiteman, voerden hun missie uit boven Afghanistan en landden op het eiland Diego Garcia. Hier werd de bemanning en lading gewisseld en vertrokken de toestellen waarbij de route in omgekeerde volgorde werd gevlogen.
Dit leidde tot missies met een vluchtduur van 30 tot soms wel 50 uur. Voor een gewoon toestel zou dit onmogelijk zijn, maar de v?rgaande automatisering van de B-2 maakt het mogelijk een bemanningslid te laten eten en slapen terwijl de ander de vlucht bewaakt.
Ook werd het toestel diverse malen ingezet boven Irak bij operatie Iraqi Freedom. Hierbij werden de toestellen tijdelijk op Diego Garcia gelegerd.

HAGATNA, Guam - A B-2 stealth bomber crashed Saturday at an air base on Guam, but both pilots ejected safely and were in good condition, the Air Force said.

It was the first crash of a B-2 bomber, said Capt. Sheila Johnston, a spokeswoman for Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Thick, black smoke could be seen billowing from the wreckage at Andersen Air Force Base, said Jeanne Ward, a resident in the northern village of Yigo who was on the base visiting her husband.
Ward said she didn't witness the crash but noticed a rising plume of smoke behind the base's air control tower.
She said crowds began to gather as emergency vehicles arrived. "Everybody was on their cell phones, and the first thing everyone wanted to know was did the pilots make it out in time," she said.
A board of officers will investigate the crash.
Each B-2 bomber costs about $1.2 billion to build. All 21 stealth bombers are based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, but the Air Force has been rotating several of them through Guam since 2004, along with B-1 and B-52 bombers.
The rotations are designed to boost the U.S. security presence in the Asia-Pacific region while other U.S. forces diverted to fight in the Middle East.
The B-2 was first publicly displayed in 1988 and took its first flight a year later. The first bomber was delivered to Whiteman in 1993.
The accident occurred 11 days after a Navy plane crashed into the ocean about 20 miles northeast of Guam's Ritidian Point. Four aircrew members ejected from the EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft and were rescued by helicopter.
Guam is a U.S. territory 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Kara Wade (Jessica Biel) en Lt. Henry Purcell (Jamie Foxx). Na een intensieve training
In films als o.a. "War Games" en "The Terminator" werd al aangegeven wat er gebeurt als oorlogsvoering aan computers c.q. machines wordt overgelaten. Ook 'Stealth" maakt gebruik van dit gegeven in de vorm van een gevechtsvliegtuig zonder piloot. De EDI intelligentie hier is een soort kruising tussen HAL-9000 (uit 2001: A Space Odyssey) en KITT (uit The Knight Rider) die als hij op hol slaat, ook zeer gemene streken uithaalt. Naast een nucleaire dreiging, het illegaal foute MP3 muziek van het internet te downloaden. De rest van het verhaal is een soort mengelmoes van "Top Gun" en een live-action versie van "Team America", compleet met alle clich?s uit die films, (inclusief de aanwezige overbodige lovestory). Hierbij moet je zeker niet nadenken over hoe het mogelijk is dat het meest geavanceerde gevechtsvliegtuig niet bestand is tegen een blikseminslag (wat elk simpel commercieel passagiersvliegtuig wel is). De film is politiek correct gecast, waarbij volgens de regels de kleuring als eerste er aangaat (en gelijk inleveren die Oscar bij de deur graag). Ook bevat de film een enorme hoeveelheid aan Amerikaans rechtspolitieke propaganda (Bush rechtvaardigingen voor het beginnen van oorlogen). Zo kun je nog wel een tijdje doorgaan, maar dat doe ik niet.
Met een budget van 130 miljoen dollar werd de film gigantisch gehiped om het financieel succes te maken. Echter, inhoudelijk en visueel viel er zelfs voor de Amerikanen nogal wat op aan te merken, met als resultaat een slecht bioscoopbezoek. Hierdoor werd de film gelijk voor de niet-Amerikaanse markt grotendeels naar de videoverhuur verbannen.
Alhoewel er naast, dat er geen spannend verhaal of goede hoofdkarakters aanwezig zijn (waar je mee kan leven of omgeven), is er wel een hoop snelle en spectaculaire actie en wordt er veel opgeblazen. De kwaliteit van de actie en special effects zijn zeer redelijk. Maar helaas vertrouwt men weer te veel op de digitale effecten, waardoor er veel uitzien als een videospelletje. Bovendien neemt de film zichzelf zo serieus dat er totaal geen humor aanwezig is. Het is dus snel, hip en hersenloos (geloofwaardigheid is geen vereiste voor een popcornfilm) peperduur Hollywood vermaak voor de 8-jarige video gamer.

Mach 3 blips were detected on radar over Machrihanish base in Scotland, famous for secret testing of the F-117 stealth aircraft. Chris Gibson, a man who worked for the British Royal Corps, was trained to recognize enemy aircraft. One day he saw a triangular shaped, unidentifiable object from his Galveston Key oilrig. It was traveling with two F-111s and refueling from a KC-135 tanker over the North Sea's Indefatigable Field refueling airspace.
The alleged Aurora is the replacement for the SR-71 Blackbird. It is referred to as the SR-X (meaning Strategic Reconnaissance Experimental). The Aurora's exhaust trail was photographed over Amarillo, Texas and seen in Machrihanih. Its exhaust trail can best be described as "cotton balls on a rope." It is said that the SR-71 Blackbird also leaves a similar cotton ball trail.
It is true that, under certain conditions, any plane can exhaust cotton balls on a rope contrail. What makes some of these sightings interesting are the sonic booms associated with the sightings. Pulsing roars accompanied by this certain contrail rattle windows and houses. These contrails have been seen in Portland, Oregon, Denver, Colorado, and Amarillo, Texas. This does not necessarily mean that it is the Aurora, but it does put strong evidence in its favor.
An unusual sound called the "Aurora Roar," associated with the craft's low travel speed, has been heard around Rachel, Nevada. The sound came from the direction of Groom Lake, or Area 51, where the plane was most likely built and test flown. The extremely loud noise can be characterized as "a sound like the sky ripping."
