A heavenly body possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth
that it would be part of this solar system has been found in the direction of the constellation
Orion by an orbiting telescope aboard the U.S. infrared astronomical satellite.

So mysterious is the object that astronomers do not know if it is a planet, a giant comet, a
nearby "protostar" that never got hot enough to become a star, a distant galaxy so young that
it is still in the process of forming its first stars or a galaxy so shrouded in dust that none of the
light cast by its stars ever gets through.

"All I can tell you is that we don't know what it is," Dr. Gerry Neugebauer, IRAS chief
scientist for California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and director of the Palomar Observatory
for the California Institute of Technology, said in an interview.

The most fascinating explanation of this mystery body, which is so cold it casts no light and
has never been seen by optical telescopes on Earth or in space, is that it is a giant gaseous
planet as large as Jupiter and as close to Earth as 50 trillion miles. While that may seem like a
great distance in earthbound terms, it is a stone's throw in cosmological terms, so close in fact
that it would be the nearest heavenly body to Earth beyond the outermost planet Pluto.

"If it is really that close, it would be a part of our solar system," said Dr. James Houck of
Cornell University's Center for Radio Physics and Space Research and a member of the
IRAS science team. "If it is that close, I don't know how the world's planetary scientists
would even begin to classify it."

The mystery body was seen twice by the infrared satellite as it scanned the northern sky from
last January to November, when the satellite ran out of the supercold helium that allowed its
telescope to see the coldest bodies in the heavens. The second observation took place six
months after the first and suggested the mystery body had not moved from its spot in the sky
near the western edge of the constellation Orion in that time.

"This suggests it's not a comet because a comet would not be as large as the one we've
observed and a comet would probably have moved," Houck said. "A planet may have moved
if it were as close as 50 trillion miles but it could still be a more distant planet and not have
moved in six months time."

Whatever it is, Houck said, the mystery body is so cold its temperature is no more than 40
degrees above "absolute" zero, which is 456 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. The telescope
aboard IRAS is cooled so low and is so sensitive it can "see" objects in the heavens that are
only 20 degrees above absolute zero.

When IRAS scientists first saw the mystery body and calculated that it could be as close as
50 trillion miles, there was some speculation that it might be moving toward Earth.

"It's not incoming mail," Cal Tech's Neugebauer said. "I want to douse that idea with as much
cold water as I can."

Then, what is it? What if it is as large as Jupiter and so close to the sun it would be part of the
solar system? Conceivably, it could be the 10th planet astronomers have searched for in vain.
It also might be a Jupiter-like star that started out to become a star eons ago but never got hot
enough like the sun to become a star.

While they cannot disprove that notion, Neugebauer and Houck are so bedeviled by it that
they do not want to accept it. Neugebauer and Houck "hope" the mystery body is a distant
galaxy either so young that its stars have not begun to shine or so surrounded by dust that its
starlight cannot penetrate the shroud.

"I believe it's one of these dark, young galaxies that we have never been able to observe
before," Neugebauer said.

"If it is, then it is a major step forward in our understanding of the size of the universe, how the
universe formed and how it continues to form as time goes on."

The next step in pinpointing what the mystery body is, Neuegebauer said, is to search for it
with the world's largest optical telescopes. Already, the 100-inch diameter telescope at Cerro
del Tololo in Chile has begun its search and the 200-inch telescope at Palomar Mountain in
California has earmarked several nights next year to look for it. If the body is close enough
and emits even a hint of light, the Palomar telescope should find it since the infrared satellite
has pinpointed its position.

En la reuni?n del 19 de junio de 1998, el Presidente del Parlamento anunci? que este informe deb?a ser elaborado, de acuerdo al procedimiento Hughes, por la Comisi?n de Asuntos Exteriores, Seguridad y Pol?tica de Defensa y por la Comisi?n de Medio Ambiente, Salud P?blica y Protecci?n del Consumidor.

Resoluci?n sobre medio ambiente, seguridad y pol?tica exterior

El Parlamento Europeo,

- Vista la propuesta de resoluci?n presentada por la Sra. Rehn Rouva sobre la utilizaci?n potencial de recursos militares para las estrategias medioambientales (B4-0551/95),

- Visto el estudio de las Naciones Unidas "Registro de los usos potenciales de los recursos asignados a actividades militares para esfuerzos civiles de protecci?n del medio ambiente" (UN A46/364, 17 de septiembre 1991),

- Vista su resoluci?n de 17 de julio de 1995 sobre "Las minas antipersonal: un obst?culo mort?fero para el desarrollo"(1),

- Vistas sus anteriores resoluciones sobre ensayos nucleares y no proliferaci?n de armas nucleares, as? como el informe de la Comisi?n de Camberra de agosto de 1996 sobre la abolici?n de las armas nucleares,

- Vista la resoluci?n un?nime del Tribunal Internacional sobre la obligaci?n de los Estados en posesi?n de armas nucleares de negociar una prohibici?n de las armas nucleares (dictamen consultivo n? 96/22, de 8 de julio de 1996),

- Vistas sus anteriores resoluciones sobre las armas qu?micas,

- Vistos los resultados de las conferencias de las Naciones Unidos de Kyoto de 1997 y de R?o de Janeiro de 1992,

- Vista la audiencia sobre el programa HAARP y las armas no letales celebrada por la Subcomisi?n de Seguridad y Desarme de la Comisi?n de Asuntos Exteriores en Bruselas el 5 de febrero de 1998,

- Visto el art?culo 148 de su Reglamento,

- Visto el informe de la Comisi?n de Asuntos Exteriores, Seguridad y Pol?tica de Defensa y la opini?n de la Comisi?n de Medio Ambiente, Salud P?blica y Protecci?n del Consumidor (A40005/99),

A. Constatando que el final de la guerra fr?a ha modificado sustancialmente la situaci?n geopol?tica en materia de seguridad y que la distensi?n militar ha dado lugar a un desarme considerable en el sector militar en general y en el sector de las armas nucleares en particular, lo que ha supuesto una considerable liberaci?n de recursos militares;

B. Considerando que, pese a esta transformaci?n total de la situaci?n geoestrat?gica desde el final de la guerra fr?a, no ha disminuido sensiblemente el riesgo de un atentado catastr?fico contra la integridad y durabilidad del medio ambiente global, en particular su biodiversidad, tanto en lo que se refiere a la activaci?n accidental o no autorizada de armas nucleares, como a la utilizaci?n autorizada de armas nucleares por miedo, aunque infundado, a una amenaza de ataque inminente,

C. Considerando que este riesgo podr?a reducirse considerablemente en un plazo muy corto de tiempo si todos los Estados que poseen un arsenal nuclear aplicaran r?pidamente las seis medidas incluidas en el informe de la Comisi?n de Camberra relativas, en particular, a la retirada de todas las armas nucleares del actual dispositivo de alerta roja y la transferencia progresiva de todas las armas a la reserva estrat?gica,

D. Considerando que el art?culo VI del Tratado sobre la no proliferaci?n de las armas nucleares (TNP) de 1968 compromete a todas las partes a "celebrar negociaciones de buena fe... sobre un tratado de desarme general y completo" y que los principios y objetivos adoptados en la Conferencia TNP de 1995 reiteraban que el objetivo ?ltimo del Tratado era la eliminaci?n completa de las armas nucleares,

E. Observando que las amenazas sobre el medio ambiente, los flujos de refugiados, los antagonismos ?tnicos, el terrorismo y la delincuencia internacional constituyen nuevas y graves amenazas para la seguridad y que, al cambiar la situaci?n de seguridad, cobra cada vez mayor importancia la capacidad de enfrentarse a distintas formas de conflictos y, dado que las amenazas para la seguridad son tambi?n de car?cter no militar, es importante que los recursos de car?cter militar se utilicen tambi?n para fines no militares;

F. Constatando que los recursos del planeta se est?n utilizando como si fueran inacabables y que esto ha producido una mayor frecuencia de cat?strofes naturales y medioambientales; constatando asimismo que esto estos problemas ecol?gicos locales y regionales pueden tener consecuencias importantes en las relaciones internacionales, y lamentando que esto no se haya reflejado m?s claramente en la pol?tica exterior, de seguridad y de defensa de los Estados miembros;

G. Considerando que los conflictos en el mundo son predominantemente conflictos dentro de los Estados en lugar de entre Estados, y que, cuando surgen conflictos entre Estados, ?stos est?n cada vez m?s relacionados con el acceso a recursos vitales b?sicos o su disponibilidad, especialmente agua, alimentos y combustible,

H. Considerando que el acceso a dichos recursos naturales vitales y su disponibilidad est?n intr?nsecamente relacionados, como causa y efecto, con la degradaci?n y contaminaci?n del medio ambiente, de lo que se deduce l?gicamente que la prevenci?n de conflictos debe centrarse m?s en estas cuestiones,

I. Considerando que la presi?n sobre la tierra, tanto f?rtil como habitable, que hist?ricamente ha sido una de las principales causas de tensi?n y conflictos, es cada vez m?s el resultado de la degradaci?n del medio ambiente, especialmente del cambio clim?tico y del consiguiente aumento de los niveles del mar,

J. Considerando que todos estos factores, que afectan sobre todo a las poblaciones m?s pobres y m?s vulnerables del mundo, producen un incremento constante de la incidencia de los denominados "refugiados medioambientales", lo que produce una presi?n directa en las pol?ticas de inmigraci?n y justicia de la UE, en la ayuda al desarrollo y en el gasto de ayuda humanitaria e, indirectamente, hace que aumenten los problemas de la UE en materia de seguridad en forma de inestabilidad regional en otras partes del mundo,

K. Considerando que, seg?n resultados detallados de la investigaci?n internacional filtrados y publicados por el Climate Institute de Washington, el n?mero de "refugiados medioambientales" es actualmente superior al n?mero de "refugiados tradicionales" (25 millones frente a 22 millones) y que se prev? que esta cifra se duplique para el a?o 2010 o que, en el peor de los casos, sea mucho mayor,

L. Considerando que la cuesti?n de los "refugiados medioambientales" es simplemente el s?ntoma de un desastre humanitario de una amplitud mucho mayor teniendo en cuenta que, seg?n la definici?n de las Naciones Unidas, 1.300 millones de personas viven en absoluta pobreza; que una cuarta parte de estas personas tratan de subsistir en zonas del mundo que son extremadamente vulnerables desde un punto de vista medioambiental y que son las que m?s contribuyen a problemas medioambientales globales como la deforestaci?n y la desertizaci?n,

M. Considerando que, desde el final de la Guerra Fr?a, la gesti?n de cuestiones globales se ha desprovisto de su aspecto ideol?gico previamente dominante y est? actualmente menos determinada por la cuesti?n del equilibrio militar pero que esto no se ha reflejado a?n en el sistema de gobernaci?n global de las Naciones Unidas mediante un mayor ?nfasis en la coherencia y efectividad de los componentes militar y no militar de la pol?tica de seguridad,

N. Considerando, no obstante, el ?nfasis en el hecho de que una parte cada vez mayor del trabajo de las Naciones Unidas sobre cuestiones pol?ticas y de seguridad es esencialmente no militar y se refiere especialmente a la relaci?n entre comercio, ayuda, medio ambiente y desarrollo sostenible,

O. Considerando que existe una urgente necesidad de movilizar recursos adecuados para hacer frente a los retos medioambientales y observando que los recursos disponibles para la protecci?n del medio ambiente son muy limitados, lo cual obliga a una nueva forma de pensar en lo que respecta a la utilizaci?n de los recursos existentes;

P. Observando que, a la vez que se liberan los recursos militares, se ofrece a los militares la oportunidad ?nica de contribuir con su enorme capacidad a los esfuerzos civiles para enfrentarse a los crecientes problemas medioambientales;

Q. Constatando que los recursos militares son recursos nacionales y que el desaf?o medioambiental es global; que, por consiguiente, existe la necesidad de encontrar formas de cooperaci?n internacional para la reasignaci?n y utilizaci?n de recursos militares en favor del medio ambiente;

R. Observando que los costes a corto plazo de la protecci?n del medio ambiente deben compararse con los costes a largo plazo que implicar?a la falta de acci?n en este ?mbito, y que existe una creciente necesidad de realizar un an?lisis de la relaci?n coste/beneficio de las distintas estrategias medioambientales, que deber?a incluir potenciales reasignaciones, reorientaciones y transferencias de recursos militares;

S. Considerando que el objetivo com?n de reparar el da?ado ecosistema terrestre no puede conseguirse sin tenerse en cuenta tambi?n la cuesti?n de una utilizaci?n justa de los recursos globales, y que existe la necesidad de facilitar la cooperaci?n t?cnica internacional y apoyar la transferencia de tecnolog?as militares adecuadas;

T. Considerando que, pese a los convenios existentes, la investigaci?n en el sector militar sigue basandose en la manipulaci?n medioambiental como arma, tal y como pone, por ejemplo, de manifiesto el sistema HAARP con base en Alaska,

U. Considerando que la experiencia adquirida con el desarrollo y la utilizaci?n de la energ?a nuclear "para fines pac?ficos" constituye una advertencia contra la invocaci?n del secreto militar para impedir una evaluaci?n y supervisi?n claras de las tecnolog?as combinadas civil/militar cuando la transparencia se encuentra, en cualquier caso, comprometida,

V. Considerando que la inquietud general sobre la degradaci?n ecol?gica y las crisis medioambientales exigen prioridades en la toma de decisiones nacionales y que el conjunto de las naciones debe reaccionar de forma eficaz ante las cat?strofes medioambientales.

1. Pide a la Comisi?n que presente al Consejo y al Parlamento una estrategia com?n tal como se prev? en el Tratado de Amsterdam, que a?ne los aspectos de la PESC en la pol?tica de la UE con el comercio, la ayuda al desarrollo y las pol?ticas internacionales en materia de medio ambiente entre los a?os 2000 y 2010 con el fin de hacer frente a las siguientes cuestiones y a su interrelaci?n:

a) producci?n agr?cola y alimentaria y degradaci?n del medio ambiente;

b) escasez de agua y suministro transfronterizo de agua;

c) deforestaci?n y restablecimiento de las cuencas carbon?feras;

d) desempleo, subempleo y pobreza absoluta;

e) desarrollo sostenible y cambio clim?tico;

f) deforestaci?n, desertizaci?n y aumento de la poblaci?n;

g) la relaci?n entre estas cuestiones con el calentamiento del planeta y el impacto humanitario y medioambiental de acontecimientos clim?ticos cada vez m?s extremos;

2. Constata que las acciones medioambientales preventivas son un instrumento importante de la pol?tica de seguridad; pide en consecuencia a los Estados miembros que establezcan objetivos medioambientales y sanitarios en sus evaluaciones, investigaci?n militar y planes de acci?n a largo plazo en el ?mbito de la defensa y de la seguridad;

3. Reconoce el importante papel del ej?rcito en la sociedad democr?tica y sus tareas en la defensa nacional, as? como el hecho de que las iniciativas destinadas a garantizar y fomentar la paz pueden contribuir de forma considerable a evitar los da?os en el medio ambiente;

4. Considera que las pruebas nucleares atmosf?ricas y subterr?neas han diseminado, como consecuencia de la lluvia radiactiva, importantes cantidades de cesio-137 radiactivo, estroncio 90 y otros is?topos cancer?genos en todo el planeta y han ocasionado importantes perjuicios medioambientales y para la salud en las zonas en que se han realizado las pruebas;

5. Considera que algunas partes del mundo se encuentran amenazadas por el almacenamiento y la inmersi?n incontrolados, inseguros y poco profesionales de los submarinos nucleares, as? como por su combustible radiactivo y las fugas de los reactores nucleares; considera que, a causa de ello, son muchas las posibilidades de que grandes regiones puedan verse pronto contaminadas por la radiaci?n;

6. Considera que todav?a se ha de encontrar una soluci?n adecuada al problema de las armas qu?micas y convencionales sumergidas despu?s de las dos guerras mundiales en numerosos puntos de los mares que rodean a Europa como una soluci?n "f?cil" para deshacerse de estas reservas, sin que nadie sepa todav?a hoy en d?a cu?les pueden ser las repercusiones ecol?gicas a largo plazo, en particular para la fauna marina y la vida costera;

7. Considera que la Uni?n Europea deber? contribuir a encontrar una soluci?n al problema de que, como consecuencia de las actuales guerras en regiones enteras de ?frica, se hayan arruinado estructuras agr?colas y humanas, con lo que las tierras est?n sufriendo ahora un desastre medioambiental, en particular a causa de la deforestaci?n y la erosi?n, con la consiguiente desertificaci?n;

8. Pide, en consecuencia, al ej?rcito que ponga fin a todas aquellas actividades que contribuyen a perjudicar el medio ambiente y la salud y que tomen todas las medidas necesarias para limpiar y descontaminar las zonas contaminadas;

Utilizaci?n de recursos militares con fines medioambientales

9. Considera que los recursos disponibles para restablecer y preservar el medio ambiente deteriorado no son suficientes para hacer frente a la amenaza ecol?gica mundial y, por consiguiente, pide a los Estados miembros que utilicen los recursos militares en favor del medio ambiente mediante la adopci?n de medidas destinadas a:

a) establecer una formaci?n de soldados del medio ambiente, con vistas a crear una brigada medioambiental coordinada a nivel europeo;

b) realizar un inventario de sus necesidades medioambientales y de los recursos militares disponibles para fines medioambientales y utilizar dichos recursos en los planes medioambientales nacionales;

c) examinar los recursos militares que se pueden poner a disposici?n de las Naciones Unidas

o de la Uni?n Europea, de forma puntual, a largo plazo o listos para intervenir en caso de necesidad, como instrumento de la cooperaci?n internacional ante cat?strofes o crisis medioambientales;

d) desarrollar planes para la creaci?n de grupos de protecci?n internacionales y europeos con utilizaci?n de personal, equipos e instalaciones del sector militar, que est?n disponibles en el marco de la Asociaci?n por la paz para su intervenci?n en situaciones de emergencia relacionadas con el medio ambiente;

e) integrar en su concepto de seguridad los objetivos de conservaci?n del medio ambiente y desarrollo sostenible;

f) garantizar que el sector militar respete determinadas normas medioambientales y se corrijan los efectos de los da?os medioambientales debidos a actividades militares;

g) tomar en consideraci?n el medio ambiente en sus programas militares de investigaci?n y desarrollo;

10. Pide a los Estados miembros de la Uni?n Europea que, dado que las experiencias pr?cticas en este ?mbito son limitadas:

a) establezcan centros de intercambio de informaci?n sobre experiencias nacionales de aplicaci?n medioambiental de recursos militares;

b) faciliten la divulgaci?n mundial de informaci?n medioambiental, incluyendo la informaci?n que se consigue a trav?s de sat?lites militares y otras plataformas de recogida de informaci?n;

11. Pide a los Estados miembros que apliquen a la actividad militar la legislaci?n medioambiental aplicable a la sociedad civil y que el sector militar se responsabilice y financie la investigaci?n, el saneamiento y descontaminaci?n de las zonas da?adas por anteriores actividades militares, de manera que dichas zonas puedan volver a ser utilizadas con fines civiles, lo cual es especialmente importante en lo que se refiere a los grandes dep?sitos de municiones qu?micas y convencionales a lo largo de las costas de la UE;

12. Pide a todos los Estados miembros que establezcan objetivos medioambientales y sanitarios y planes de acci?n para mejorar la protecci?n del medio ambiente y la salud en el ?mbito de sus fuerzas armadas respectivas;

13. Pide a los Gobiernos de los Estados miembros que mejoren la seguridad medioambiental en el ?mbito militar mediante la formaci?n, el desarrollo tecnol?gico y una formaci?n medioambiental b?sica de todo el personal militar y de remplazo;

14. Pide a la Uni?n Europea que una sus esfuerzos para establecer una nueva estrategia medioambiental en la que se utilicen recursos militares para una protecci?n del medio ambiente com?n;

15. Considera que las estrategias medioambientales deben incluir la vigilancia del medio ambiente mundial, la evaluaci?n de la informaci?n recogida, la coordinaci?n del trabajo cient?fico y la divulgaci?n de la informaci?n, aprovechando la informaci?n relevante de los sistemas de alerta y vigilancia nacionales, con el fin de disponer de una visi?n de conjunto permanente de la situaci?n medioambiental;

16. Subraya que la importante reducci?n de los gastos militares puede dar lugar a problemas regionales graves y pide a los Estados miembros que intensifiquen sus esfuerzos con vistas a reconvertir la producci?n y la tecnolog?a militar para fines civiles mediante programas nacionales e iniciativas comunitarias como el programa KONVER;

17. Subraya la importancia de reforzar el trabajo medioambiental preventivo con el fin de poder enfrentarse a las cat?strofes naturales y medioambientales;

18. Pide a la Comisi?n que elabore un estudio exhaustivo de las amenazas medioambientales para la seguridad en Europa y que elabore un "libro verde" sobre las repercusiones en el medio ambiente de la actividad militar;

19. Insta al Consejo a que intervenga en?rgicamente para que los EEUU, Rusia, India y China firmen sin demora el Convenio de Ottawa de 1997 sobre la prohibici?n y destrucci?n de minas antipersonas.

20. Considera que la UE debe ayudar en mayor medida a las v?ctimas de las minas, apoyar el desarrollo de tecnolog?as para la retirada de minas y acelerar el desarrollo de m?todos de retirada de minas;

21. Considera que debe lucharse contra el secreto que rodea la investigaci?n militar y que debe promoverse el derecho de transparencia y control democr?tico de los proyectos de investigaci?n militar;

22. Pide a los Estados miembros que desarrollen tecnolog?as limpias y ecol?gicas para la destrucci?n de armas;

23. Subraya que una de las amenazas medioambientales m?s graves en zonas pr?ximas a la UE es la falta de control de los residuos de la industria nuclear, de las existencias de armas biol?gicas y qu?micas, as? como el saneamiento de zonas en las que se han desarrollado actividades militares; subraya que es importante que los Estados miembros act?en en favor del refuerzo de la cooperaci?n internacional, por ejemplo en el marco de las Naciones Unidas

o de la Asociaci?n por la Paz, con vistas a destruir estas armas de una manera tan respetuosa con la protecci?n del medio ambiente como sea posible;

24. Considera que todas las negociaciones que se celebren en el futuro sobre la reducci?n y posible eliminaci?n de las armas nucleares deber?n basarse en los principios relativos a los compromisos contra?dos para una reducci?n mutua y equilibrada;

25. Considera que, dadas las circunstancias de especial dificultad que afectan a los pa?ses de la antigua Uni?n Sovi?tica, la amenaza al medio ambiente mundial y local planteada por la degradaci?n de las condiciones de las armas y materiales nucleares a?n en posesi?n de estos pa?ses hace m?s urgente la prioridad de alcanzar un acuerdo sobre la eliminaci?n progresiva de las armas nucleares;

Aspectos jur?dicos de la actividad militar

26. Pide a la Uni?n Europea que act?e de manera que las tecnolog?as de armas denominadas no letales y el desarrollo de nuevas estrategias de armas est?n cubiertas y reguladas por convenios internacionales;

27. Considera que el HAARP (Programa de Investigaci?n de Alta Frecuencia Auroral Activa) es un asunto de inter?s mundial debido a sus considerables repercusiones sobre el medio ambiente y exige que los aspectos jur?dicos, ecol?gicos y ?ticos sean investigados por un ?rgano internacional independiente antes de continuar la investigaci?n y los ensayos; lamenta que el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos se haya negado reiteradamente a enviar a un representante que preste declaraci?n, ante la audiencia p?blica o cualquier reuni?n posterior que celebre su comisi?n competente, sobre los riesgos medioambientales y para la poblaci?n del Programa de Investigaci?n de Alta Frecuencia Auroral Activa (HAARP) que se est? financiando en la actualidad en Alaska;

28. Pide que el grupo encargado de evaluar las opciones cient?ficas y tecnol?gicas (STOA) acepte examinar las pruebas cient?ficas y t?cnicas disponibles en todos las conclusiones de las investigaciones que se est?n llevando a cabo en la actualidad sobre el programa HAARP, con el objeto de evaluar la naturaleza exacta y el grado de riesgo de este programa para el medio ambiente local y mundial, as? como para la salud p?blica en general;

29. Pide a la Comisi?n que, en colaboraci?n con los Gobiernos de Suecia, Finlandia, Noruega y la Federaci?n Rusa, examine las repercusiones medioambientales y para la salud p?blica del programa HAARP para el Ant?rtico y que le informe de sus conclusiones;

30. Pide, en particular, que se celebre un convenio internacional para la prohibici?n global de toda la investigaci?n y desarrollo, ya sea militar o civil, que tenga como finalidad aplicar los conocimientos qu?micos, el?ctricos, de vibraci?n de sonido u otro tipo de funcionamiento del cerebro humano al desarrollo de armas que puedan permitir cualquier forma de manipulaci?n de seres humanos, incluyendo la prohibici?n de cualquier despliegue actual o posible de dichos sistemas;

31. Pide a la Uni?n Europea y a sus Estados miembros que se esfuercen por conseguir un acuerdo internacional para, en caso de guerra, proteger al medio ambiente de da?os innecesarios;

32. Pide a la Uni?n Europea y sus Estados miembros que act?en en favor del establecimiento de normas internacionales aplicables a la actividad militar en tiempo de paz en relaci?n con sus repercusiones sobre el medio ambiente;

33. Pide al Consejo de la UE que act?e en favor de la aplicaci?n de las propuestas de la Comisi?n de Camberra y del art?culo 6 del Acuerdo de no proliferaci?n sobre eliminaci?n de armas nucleares;

34. Pide al Consejo, y en particular a los Gobiernos del Reino Unido y de Francia, que tomen la iniciativa en el marco del TNP y de la Conferencia sobre Desarme de proseguir las negociaciones destinadas a lograr la plena aplicaci?n de los compromisos sobre reducci?n y eliminaci?n de armas nucleares lo m?s r?pidamente posible hasta un nivel provisional en el que las existencias mundiales de armas nucleares no planteen una amenaza a la integridad y sostenibilidad del medio ambiente mundial;

35. Pide a la Presidencia del Consejo, a la Comisi?n y a los Gobiernos de los Estados miembros que aboguen en favor del enfoque adoptado en esta resoluci?n en todas las pr?ximas reuniones de las Naciones Unidas que se celebren bajo los auspicios o en el marco del TNP, as? como de la Conferencia sobre desarme;

36. Pide a la Presidencia del Consejo y a la Comisi?n que, de conformidad con el art?culo J.7 del Tratado de la Uni?n Europea, informen sobre la posici?n de la Uni?n respecto a los puntos espec?ficos incluidos en la presente resoluci?n en el contexto de las pr?ximas sesiones de las Naciones Unidas, sus agencias y organismos, especialmente el Comit? preparatorio del TNP de 1999, la Conferencia sobre Desarme y otros foros internacionales relevantes;

37. Encarga a su Presidente que transmita la presente resoluci?n al Consejo, a la Comisi?n, a los Estados miembros y a las Naciones Unidas.

Una defensa contra los peligros medioambientales

La situaci?n en materia de pol?tica de seguridad ha cambiado considerablemente en un tiempo relativamente corto. Hace menos de 10 a?os el tel?n de acero atravesaba una Europa saturada de armas nucleares. Actualmente, Europa se unifica y la Uni?n Europea se est? ampliando para incluir a los antiguos pa?ses del Pacto de Varsovia. La guerra fr?a ha terminado y una guerra generalizada en Europa parece hoy d?a imposible. Simult?neamente, surgen nuevos peligros. Los importantes flujos de refugiados, los antagonismos ?tnicos, el terrorismo y la delincuencia internacional son algunos ejemplos de las actuales amenazas a la seguridad. Otra grave amenaza la constituyen las cat?strofes naturales y los problemas medioambientales, causados por la propia naturaleza y por la manera en que los hombres utilizan los recursos naturales.

Una serie de cat?strofes ecol?gicas han situado a la humanidad ante nuevos problemas; el ?ltimo caso fue el accidente de la presa en Espa?a. La erosi?n de la tierra en Italia, los estragos causados por el fen?meno natural El Ni?o y el accidente nuclear de Chernobil son otros ejemplos actuales de las terribles consecuencias de las cat?strofes naturales y ecol?gicas. En algunas partes del mundo la sequ?a ha destruido las cosechas de varios a?os, con sus consecuencias de hambre y muerte de gran parte de la poblaci?n. La defensa de la humanidad ante estas cat?strofes es hoy en d?a muy d?bil.

Las cat?strofes naturales y ecol?gicas suponen una tragedia para las personas concretas y pueden tener consecuencias catastr?ficas para la sociedad y para todas las naciones. Los costes que este tipo de cat?strofes producen son considerables, tanto en t?rminos de vidas humanas como en recursos para restaurar los da?os materiales. Cada vez que ocurre una de estas cat?strofes resulta evidente que no existen suficientes recursos para detectarla y/o prevenirla. Los esfuerzos se realizan normalmente demasiado tarde. Por consiguiente, debe reforzarse el trabajo preventivo. El esfuerzo que se exige para ello es enorme y los recursos disponibles son muy limitados. Esto exige una nueva manera de pensar para utilizar los recursos disponibles, a la vez que se echa mano de nuevos recursos. Es evidente que una naci?n por s? misma no puede enfrentarse a las cat?strofes ecol?gicas y que los problemas medioambientales exigen que las naciones colaboren. Las amenazas son mundiales y la cooperaci?n internacional es fundamental.

Los problemas ecol?gicos locales y regionales pueden tener consecuencias importantes para las relaciones internacionales. La lluvia radiactiva, las inundaciones o la sequ?a no se detienen ante las fronteras nacionales. Los refugiados medioambientales cruzan las fronteras nacionales hacia naciones igual o m?s pobres. Estas nuevas causas de inestabilidad e inseguridad deben reflejarse en el contenido y la forma del modo en que las naciones crean y mantienen la paz y la seguridad. Dado que los problemas medioambientales y ecol?gicos constituyen graves amenazas para la paz y la seguridad, estos problemas deben reflejarse en la pol?tica exterior, de defensa y de seguridad. Existe la necesidad de analizar la manera en que los recursos militares pueden utilizarse contra esta creciente amenaza y para eliminar estas nuevas fuentes de inestabilidad e inseguridad. Existe una necesidad urgente de movilizar recursos para hacer frente al desaf?o medioambiental.

El cambio de la situaci?n en la pol?tica de seguridad ha dado como resultado la distensi?n militar, el desarme y medidas de confianza entre los antiguos enemigos EE.UU. y Rusia. Esto ha resultado en una reducci?n sustancial de fuerzas militares y en la disoluci?n de unidades militares y esto a su vez ha hecho que el material militar se haya convertido en superfluo. Especialmente Rusia y los EE.UU. han reducidos sustancialmente su defensa militar, pero tambi?n en Europa se han reducido los gastos militares (1).

La liberaci?n de recursos militares proporciona a los militares una oportunidad ?nica y una gran capacidad para enfrentarse a los crecientes problemas medioambientales. Los militares tienen una excelente organizaci?n y considerables recursos t?cnicos que pueden utilizarse sin grandes costes para fines de protecci?n del medio ambiente. Esto se puede conseguir mediante una reasignaci?n o transferencia de recursos. La Uni?n Europea puede unirse en torno a una nueva estrategia medioambiental en la que los recursos militares se utilicen en una defensa medioambiental com?n. La Uni?n Europea puede jugar un importante papel de promoci?n de una responsabilidad ecol?gica mundial y, al mismo tiempo, fomentar la paz y la confianza.

Los Estados miembros de la Uni?n Europea disponen de los requisitos t?cnicos y econ?micos para asumir una responsabilidad medioambiental considerable. Tambi?n saben lo que significar?a hacer caso omiso del desaf?o medioambiental. El deterioro ecol?gico influye en las condiciones de crecimiento y desarrollo econ?mico, pero, a pesar de ello, los gastos militares mundiales son de 3 a 5 veces superiores a los gastos de protecci?n del medio ambiente (2).

El sector militar en s? mismo constituye un importante factor de destrucci?n medioambiental. Por esta raz?n, deben asumir una especial responsabilidad con el medio ambiente.

Las modernas amenazas a la seguridad

Existe una conciencia internacional cada vez mayor sobre la importancia de los problemas medioambientales, como lo muestran las conferencias de seguimiento de las Naciones Unidas sobre el agua (Mar del Plata), la desertificaci?n (Nairobi), el medio ambiente y el desarrollo (R?o de Janeiro) y los cambios clim?ticos (Kyoto). Los problemas medioambientales pueden dar lugar a problemas tan graves que pueden poner en peligro la seguridad de las personas y de los Estados. Los problemas medioambientales tambi?n pueden tener consecuencias para las relaciones entre los Estados. El aire y el agua no se detienen ante las fronteras nacionales. Veamos algunos ejemplos concretos de amenazas medioambientales potenciales o existentes:

Recursos acu?feros limitados

A la vez que aumenta la poblaci?n mundial, aumenta tambi?n la demanda de agua limpia. El agua dulce es un recurso natural repartido muy desigualmente, menos de 10 pa?ses poseen el 60% de los recursos mundiales de agua dulce (3) y algunos Estados de Europa dependen de las importaciones de agua. En futuros conflictos, un ataque contra las fuentes de agua dulce puede ser no s?lo un objetivo en s? mismo sino tambi?n la causa de conflictos. Los conflictos sobre qui?n tiene derecho al agua pueden resultar en una mayor tensi?n internacional, as? como en conflictos locales y/o internacionales. Por ejemplo, las disputas sobre el r?o Indo podr?an desencadenar un conflicto armado en las tensas relaciones entre la India y el Pakist?n. La lista de potenciales conflictos causados por el agua puede hacerse muy larga. Se calcula que 300 r?os, lagos y fuentes de agua subterr?nea se encuentran en zonas fronterizas internacionales (4). En el Oriente Medio 9 de 14 pa?ses tienen escasez de agua y existe el peligro real de que los otros pa?ses puedan verse afectados (5). En 1995 una quinta parte de la poblaci?n mundial no ten?a acceso a agua limpia y se calcula que esta cifra aumentar? en el a?o 1995 (6).

Cambios clim?ticos

La temperatura de la Tierra ha aumentado 5? en este siglo debido a un aumento de las emisiones, sobre todo de di?xido de carbono (7). El calor tambi?n se ha hecho m?s intenso. Los investigadores han descubierto que la humedad del aire ha aumentado en un 10% en los ?ltimos 20 a?os. La mayor humedad del aire puede ser la causa de que en algunas zonas se produzcan tormentas cada vez m?s fuertes y con mayor frecuencia, a la vez que otras zonas se ven afectadas por la sequ?a. Se necesitar?n dos d?cadas de investigaci?n intensa sobre los cambios clim?ticos mundiales para poder tomar decisiones m?s concretas sobre las medidas que es necesario adoptar.

El Panel Intergubernamental sobre el cambio clim?tico (IPCC), una organizaci?n internacional con 2.000 de los m?s eminentes investigadores del mundo, prev? que las temperaturas de la tierra aumentar?n entre 1,5 y 4,5 grados y que el nivel del mar se habr? elevado en 50 cm para el a?o 2100 si las emisiones de di?xido de carbono contin?an como hasta ahora. Se calcula que un tercio de la poblaci?n mundial y algo m?s de un tercio de las infraestructuras se encuentran en las zonas costeras del mundo. Un aumento del nivel del mar sumergir?a extensas zonas y varios millones de personas estar?an afectadas por el hambre debido a la p?rdida de grandes extensiones agr?colas.

Estas y otras amenazas medioambientales pueden dar lugar a un ?xodo de refugiados. Cada vez en mayor medida los refugiados medioambientales est?n siendo objeto de la atenci?n internacional. Se calcula que 25 millones de personas son refugiados de la sequ?a, la erosi?n terrestre, la desertificaci?n y otros problemas medioambientales, frente a 22 millones de refugiados "tradicionales". Los refugiados medioambientales pueden, seg?n los expertos, ser la causa de una de las peores crisis humanitarias de nuestra ?poca (8). Estos refugiados sufren problemas sociales, pol?ticos y econ?micos que pueden dar lugar a conflictos y violencia. Debe reconocerse oficialmente a los refugiados medioambientales. Es necesaria una mayor cooperaci?n internacional para limitar estos problemas y una mayor ayuda a los pa?ses afectados y a sus habitantes.

Impacto militar sobre el medio ambiente en ?poca de guerra y de paz

La actividad militar es la causa de una considerable destrucci?n medioambiental en la sociedad. Las actividades militares tienen consecuencias muy negativas para el medio ambiente, tanto en tiempo de paz como en tiempo de guerra, tanto intencionalmente como de manera no deseada. La destrucci?n del medio ambiente ha sido desde la antig?edad un m?todo de guerra. La guerra tambi?n constituye la amenaza m?s grave para el medio ambiente. Un ejemplo actual son las devastadoras consecuencias de la guerra del Golfo, con cientos de pozos de petr?leo en llamas y grandes cantidades de sustancias t?xicas liberadas en la atm?sfera de forma incontrolada. Pasar? mucho tiempo hasta que se restablezca el medio ambiente. Algunos de los da?os pueden ser irreparables.

Los militares desarrollan armas cada vez m?s potentes que producen extensos y devastadores da?os en el medio ambiente. Una guerra moderna conlleva mayores da?os medioambientales que cualquier otra actividad perjudicial para el medio ambiente. A continuaci?n se describen algunos sistemas de armas que pueden tener consecuencias graves para el medio ambiente tambi?n en tiempo de paz.


Las minas son enormemente da?inas para el medio ambiente. Seg?n el programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) las minas terrestres son unos de los restos de material de guerra m?s extendido y puede afectar al equilibrio ecol?gico. La colocaci?n de minas puede destruir extensas zonas, a menudo zonas agr?colas, que durante mucho tiempo ser?n inutilizables. Las minas constituyen el mayor obst?culo para el desarrollo en muchas de las zonas m?s pobres del mundo. Hay colocadas entre 80 y 110 millones de minas en 65 pa?ses, que pueden detonar d?cadas despu?s de su colocaci?n y la mayor?a de las v?ctimas son civiles, sobre todo ni?os. El levantamiento de minas es un proceso peligroso, lento y costoso. El desarrollo de nuevos m?todos de levantamiento de minas se est? produciendo muy lentamente y debe acelerarse.

Un dato positivo es que la Conferencia de Oslo de 1997 tuvo como resultado la prohibici?n sin excepci?n de todas las minas antipersonas, la obligaci?n de destruir las existencias de minas (9) en un plazo de 4 a?os y la concesi?n de mayor ayuda a los pa?ses afectados por las minas. Un gran n?mero de Estados firm? el Convenio de Ottawa de 1997, pero algunos Estados, entre los que se encuentran los EE.UU., Rusia, India y China, no lo han hecho. La Uni?n Europea debe actuar para que estos pa?ses se adhieran al acuerdo. La Uni?n Europea debe ayudar en mayor medida a las v?ctimas de las minas y apoyar el desarrollo de t?cnicas de levantamiento de minas.

Armas denominadas no letales(10)

Las denominadas armas no letales no son un nuevo tipo de armas sino que han existido en muchos a?os en forma de, por ejemplo, ca?ones de agua, balas de goma y gas lacrim?geno. Pero actualmente se han desarrollado t?cnicas m?s avanzadas que, a pesar de que pueden causar da?os graves e incluso la invalidez o la muerte, se denominan no letales.

Se han desarrollado tecnolog?as contra material y contra personas. Un ejemplo son las armas ac?sticas que, al producir un ruido de bajo nivel, pueden confundir y desorientar, y de esa manera neutralizar, al enemigo. Otros ejemplos son la espuma adhesiva y el l?ser cegador. Los productos qu?micos que decoloran el agua pueden afectar tanto a la agricultura como a la poblaci?n. Mediante rayos electromagn?ticos se pueden destruir los sistemas de informaci?n, navegaci?n y comunicaci?n del enemigo. Las denominadas amas no letales tambi?n pueden utilizarse contra las infraestructuras y las autoridades de un Estado, pueden destruir el sistema de ferrocarril o producir el caos en el sector financiero de un pa?s. La caracter?stica com?n de estas armas es que tienen como objetivo retrasar, obstruir y vencer a un potencial enemigo a "nivel estrat?gico"(11).

El hecho de que estos tipos de armas se conozcan con la denominaci?n com?n de no letales es gravemente enga?oso. La denominaci?n de "no letales" pretende presentar estas armas como m?s humanas que las armas convencionales -pero no hay armas humanas. La utilizaci?n de un tipo de armas constituye un peligro de da?os o muerte que es precisamente el objetivo de las armas. Las denominadas armas no letales se aplicar?an en los primeros momentos de un conflicto y pueden en s? mismas ser la causa del conflicto. El recurso a la violencia por parte de soldados y polic?as puede aumentar debido a que las armas se presentan como menos peligrosas. Existe el riesgo real de que estas armas reduzcan el umbral del recurso a la violencia para la soluci?n de conflictos.

El objetivo es neutralizar al enemigo sin sufrimientos prolongados y sin muertes. Pero c?mo y contra qui?n se utilizar?n las armas no letales es un aspecto importante para los efectos que puedan tener dichas armas. Un arma que puede neutralizar a un soldado puede herir e incluso matar a un ni?o o a una persona anciana. La distancia a la que se disparen y en qu? cantidad son otros factores que hay que tener en cuenta al calcular los efectos de las armas. Como punto de referencia se puede mencionar que las armas convencionales "s?lo" producen un 25% de muertes (12).

Las denominadas armas no letales se utilizan como medio efectivo en la guerra moderna, aisladamente o junto con las armas convencionales. Por ejemplo, los EE.UU. utilizaron armas de radiofrecuencia en la guerra del Golfo para destruir el sistema energ?tico de Iraq (13), a pesar de que no se conoc?an los efectos antipersonas de las armas de radiofrecuencia. Por lo tanto, las armas no letales no deben considerarse separadamente sino como un componente de un sistema letal. El desarrollo de las denominadas armas no letales ofrece un mayor n?mero de opciones en la guerra. El resultado es, por lo tanto, una mayor utilizaci?n de la fuerza en lugar de lo contrario. Las denominadas armas no letales no dan como resultado conflictos no letales.

A la vez que se desarrollan m?s tipos de armas no letales, aumenta el inter?s de los militares, la polic?a y el ?mbito pol?tico de probar la manera en que funcionan. Las armas no letales no deben utilizarse como un instrumento de interferencia y dominio pol?tico de los pa?ses del norte sobre los pa?ses del sur.

Hace falta una legislaci?n efectiva para las armas no letales. S?lo una peque?a parte de las armas y t?cnicas no letales pueden prohibirse en virtud de la interpretaci?n de normas de control de armas, por ejemplo la espuma adhesiva, que se utiliz? en Somalia y Bosnia. Algunos tipos de l?ser (el l?ser cegador) tambi?n se ha limitado en el Convenio sobre determinadas armas convencionales. Las toxinas biol?gicas (por ejemplo, la salmonela y otras bacterias) est?n prohibidas por el Convenio sobre armas biol?gicas. Algunas de estas armas tienen graves consecuencias para el medio ambiente. Por consiguiente la legislaci?n internacional debe reforzarse para regular las nuevas armas que siguen desarroll?ndose.

El proyecto Cyrus del Comit? de la Cruz Roja Internacional podr?a utilizarse a falta de otras normas internacionales adecuadas para las armas no letales. El proyecto Cyrus ha clasificado y establecido criterios m?s estrictos para las armas convencionales en lo que se refiere a mortalidad, invalidez, tratamiento necesario, transfusi?n de sangre, etc. La Uni?n Europea debe actuar de manera que los convenios internacionales regulen tambi?n las nuevas tecnolog?as de armas y el desarrollo de nuevas estrategias de armas.

Armas qu?micas

Las medidas de las Naciones Unidas destinadas a destruir las armas qu?micas y otros tipos de armas de destrucci?n masiva en Iraq ha producido una grave preocupaci?n sobre las repercusiones medioambientales de las actividades militares y ha subrayado la necesidad de buscar m?todos ecol?gicos para neutralizar las armas. El convenio sobre armas qu?micas (CWC) entr? en vigor en abril de 1997. El art?culo 1 obliga a los Estados que han ratificado el convenio a no desarrollar, producir o exportar armas qu?micas en ninguna circunstancia. Tambi?n obliga a no utilizar armas qu?micas y a destruir las armas qu?micas existentes. En virtud del art?culo 3, los Estados deber?n notificar, en un plazo de 30 d?as tras la entrada en vigor del convenio, informaci?n sobre la posesi?n de armas qu?micas y su localizaci?n, as? como presentar un plan para la destrucci?n de dichas armas. La destrucci?n debe comenzar con las existencias m?s antiguas. 165 Estados han firmado el convenio y 110 lo han ratificado. 26 Estados no han firmado el convenio, entre ellos algunos pa?ses importantes del Oriente Medio.

La destrucci?n de armas qu?micas ha dado lugar a una grave preocupaci?n por el medio ambiente - estas armas representan decenas de miles de toneladas de gas de mostaza, gas nervioso y otras sustancias qu?micas. Las armas qu?micas pueden destruirse mediante incineraci?n, pero muy pocos pa?ses tienen instalaciones adecuadas para ello. La neutralizaci?n de las armas qu?micas es un proceso caro, entre 3 y 10 veces m?s caro que el proceso de producci?n de dichas armas. Para que Rusia, que tiene existencias muy importantes, pueda hacerlo, es necesaria la ayuda econ?mica de otros pa?ses. En Kambarka, una ciudad rusa, se encuentran 6.000 toneladas de armas qu?micas almacenadas en construcciones de madera a 2 kil?metros de una zona muy poblada. El tratamiento de estas cantidades de sustancias peligrosas exige esfuerzos importantes y el proceso durar? algunos a?os. Existe un claro riesgo de que se produzcan accidentes o de que las armas caigan en poder de destinatarios no deseados.

Se ha confirmado que aproximadamente 150.000 toneladas de bombas, obuses y minas con armas qu?micas, principalmente gas de mostaza, fosgeno, tabun y ars?nico, se depositaron en Skagerack al final de la segunda guerra mundial. En el Mar B?ltico la cifra es de 40.000 toneladas. Muchos de los contenedores se encuentran completamente oxidados y las armas qu?micas est?n en contacto directo con el agua del mar. De todas formas, se ha decidido que deben permanecer en el fondo del mar ya que el riesgo de recuperarlas se considera a?n mayor.

Armas nucleares

Las repercusiones medioambientales de las armas nucleares podr?an ser enormes. Es probable que el efecto combinado de la lluvia radiactiva en extensas zonas, el deterioro de la capa de ozono por los ?xidos de nitr?geno de las explosiones nucleares y el cambio clim?tico producido por extensos y continuos incendios dar?a lugar a graves cat?strofes ecol?gicas en grandes zonas del planeta.

Los ensayos nucleares tienen tambi?n efectos perjudiciales sobre el medio ambiente. La cantidad total de radiactividad liberada a la atm?sfera en los ensayos atmosf?ricos se calcula entre 100 y 1.000 veces mayor que la producida en Chernobil (14). El acuerdo de 1963 entre los EE.UU., la URSS y el Reino Unido sobre prohibici?n parcial de ensayos nucleares proh?be los ensayos en la atm?sfera, en el espacio exterior y subacu?ticos, es decir todos los ensayos menos los subterr?neos.

Francia ha realizado 180 ensayos nucleares en el atol?n Mururoa en el Oc?ano Pac?fico desde 1966 con importantes repercusiones sobre el medio ambiente (15). Se ha encontrado una peligrosa cantidad de varios kilos de plutonio en el fondo de las lagunas en Mururoa y Fangataufa. Tambi?n se han esparcido part?culas de plutonio en la tierra de tres islas en las proximidades de Mururoa (16). La India y el Pakist?n tambi?n han realizado recientemente ensayos nucleares (17). Su desarrollo t?cnico no se considera lo suficientemente controlado, lo que supone que los ensayos nucleares pueden tener repercusiones medioambientales en zonas muy lejanas de estas regiones. Debe efectuarse inmediatamente una investigaci?n internacional independiente del impacto medioambiental en los lugares donde se realizaron los ensayos y en las zonas pr?ximas.

El plutonio es ciertamente la sustancia m?s peligrosa que se conoce. Muchos pa?ses poseen grandes cantidades de plutonio militar y pueden producirse armas nucleares de una forma relativamente simple a partir de plutonio "civil". Las instalaciones que actualmente tienen una funci?n civil pueden convertirse r?pidamente en f?bricas de armas. En la fabricaci?n del plutonio se producen grandes cantidades de residuos l?quidos altamente radiactivos. El tratamiento de los residuos radiactivos causa problemas enormes. La producci?n en gran escala de armas de destrucci?n masiva durante las ?ltimas d?cadas ha producido grandes cantidades de residuos. No existe ning?n m?todo adecuado conocido para almacenar los residuos radiactivos. Se almacenan normalmente en contenedores, pero grandes cantidades se liberan en la naturaleza. Los residuos radiactivos son extremadamente inflamables y pueden explotar si no est?n ventilados o refrigerados. En 1957 ocurri? un accidente en la planta nuclear Chelyabinsk-65 cerca de la ciudad de Kystym en los Urales. Un contenedor radiactivo explot? y los residuos radiactivos se extendieron en una zona de 1.000 Km2. Fue preciso evacuar a 10.000 personas. Cerca del lago Karachay, en las proximidades de Chelyabinsk-65, todav?a es posible recibir, situ?ndose simplemente en la orilla del lago, un nivel de radiactividad tal que produce la muerte instant?nea (18).

En la zona del B?ltico existen extensas ?reas contaminadas por antiguas actividades militares sovi?ticas. En Estonia, se encuentra el lago Sillanm?, tambi?n llamado el lago nuclear, que acoge residuos militares radiactivos equivalentes a miles de armas nucleares, el lago Sillanm? se encuentra a 100 metros del mar B?ltico. Cualquier vertido al mar B?ltico podr?a tener consecuencias devastadoras para el medio ambiente en toda la regi?n del B?ltico.

A finales de la d?cada de los ochenta Rusia dispon?a de m?s armas nucleares que todos los dem?s pa?ses juntos. En la pen?nsula de Kola y en Sevrodvinsk en Rusia se encuentra actualmente la mayor concentraci?n de reactores nucleares del mundo (240 unidades) (19). Grandes cantidades de residuos radiactivos y de submarinos nucleares se han almacenado en astilleros de la pen?nsula de Kola. Rusia y la flota rusa se encuentran en una situaci?n imposible para tratar los reactores fuera de servicio. No tienen posibilidades econ?micas para financiar un desmontaje seguro. Los bajos sueldos han tenido como consecuencia que el personal cualificado abandone los astilleros, lo que produce una gran escasez de personal cualificado.

Incluso en el centro de Mosc? se han encontrado 1.200 fuentes de envenenamiento radiactivo, incluyendo canteras de arena, refugios antia?reos, viviendas privadas, garajes e instalaciones deportivas (20). La posibilidad de que Rusia pueda liberarse de las armas nucleares, qu?micas y biol?gicas de los arsenales militares y de las sustancias de los institutos de investigaci?n o la industria no deben subestimarse. Es preocupante que no existan equipos adecuados para tratar los residuos de una forma que respete el medio ambiente. Tanto desde un punto de vista econ?mico como medioambiental cualquier accidente que pueda ocurrir podr?a tener repercusiones devastadoras. Cada a?o que pasa sin haber adoptado medidas suficientes hace que aumente el riesgo y la gravedad de un accidente.

Existe una propuesta concreta y realista para eliminar progresivamente las armas nucleares del mundo. La propuesta fue presentada en agosto de 1996 por el grupo de expertos independiente que constitu?a la Comisi?n de Camberra (21). En julio de 1996 el Tribunal Internacional de la Haya emiti? el dictamen un?nime de que el art?culo 6 del Tratado de no proliferaci?n obliga a los Estados nucleares a iniciar negociaciones sobre el desarme nuclear. El Tribunal tambi?n decidi? que la amenaza de la utilizaci?n de armas nucleares no era conforme con el Derecho internacional. La Uni?n Europea deber?a actuar en favor de la aplicaci?n de la propuesta de la Comisi?n de Camberra y del art?culo 6 del Tratado de no proliferaci?n.

HAARP - un sistema de armas destructor del clima

El 5 de febrero de 1998 la Subcomisi?n de Seguridad y Desarme del Parlamento Europeo celebr? una audiencia sobre, entre otras cosas, el HAARP. Se invit? a representantes de la OTAN y de los EE.UU., pero declinaron la invitaci?n.

La subcomisi?n lamenta que los EE.UU. no enviaran a un representante para responder a las preguntas o aprovechar la oportunidad de comentar el material presentado (22).

El HAARP (Programa de Investigaci?n de Alta Frecuencia Auroral Activa) es un proyecto que llevan a cabo conjuntamente la fuerza a?rea y la marina de los Estados Unidos, junto con el Instituto Geof?sico de la Universidad de Alaska, Fairbanks. Experimentos similares se est?n realizando tambi?n en Noruega, probablemente en el Ant?rtico, as? como en la antigua Uni?n Sovi?tica (23). El HAARP es un proyecto de investigaci?n que utiliza instalaciones terrestres y una red de antenas, cada una equipada con su propio transmisor, para calentar partes de la ionosfera (24) con potentes ondas de radio. La energ?a generada calienta partes de la ionosfera, lo que produce agujeros en la ionosfera y "lentes" artificiales.

El HAARP puede utilizarse para muchos fines. Mediante la manipulaci?n de las caracter?sticas el?ctricas de la ionosfera se puede controlar una gran cantidad de energ?a. Si se utiliza como arma militar, esta energ?a puede tener un impacto devastador sobre el enemigo. El HAARP puede enviar muchos millones m?s de energ?a que cualquier otro transmisor convencional. La energ?a tambi?n puede dirigirse a un blanco m?vil, lo que podr?a constituir un potencial sistema antimisiles.

El proyecto permite tambi?n una mejor comunicaci?n con submarinos y la manipulaci?n de condiciones clim?ticas globales. Ahora bien, tambi?n es posible hacer lo contrario e interferir las comunicaciones. Mediante la manipulaci?n de la ionosfera se pueden bloquear las comunicaciones globales a la vez que se transmiten las propias. Otra aplicaci?n es la penetraci?n de la tierra (tomograf?a) con rayos X a una profundidad de varios kil?metros para detectar campos de petr?leo y gas o instalaciones militares subterr?neas. Otra aplicaci?n es el radar sobre el horizonte, y definir objetivos a larga distancia. De esta manera, se puede detectar la aproximaci?n de objetos m?s all? del horizonte. Desde la d?cada de los cincuenta los EE.UU. han realizado explosiones de material nuclear en los cinturones Van Allen (25) para investigar el efecto de las explosiones nucleares a esa altura sobre las comunicaciones de radio y la operaci?n del radar gracias al pulso electromagn?tico que desprende una explosi?n. Estas explosiones crearon nuevos cinturones de radiaci?n magn?tica que cubrieron pr?cticamente todo el planeta. Los electrones se movieron en l?neas magn?ticas y crearon una Aurora Boreal artificial sobre el Polo Norte. Con estos ensayos militares se corre el peligro de destruir gravemente el cintur?n Van Allen durante mucho tiempo. El campo magn?tico de la tierra puede destruirse sobre grandes extensiones e impedir las comunicaciones por radio. Seg?n cient?ficos norteamericanos. Pueden pasar muchos a?os antes de que el cintur?n Van Allen se estabilice de nuevo. El proyecto HAARP puede resultar en cambios de la situaci?n clim?tica. Tambi?n puede influir en el ecosistema, especialmente en la regi?n sensible del Ant?rtico.

Otra consecuencia grave de HAARP son los agujeros de la ionosfera causados por las potentes ondas de radio. La ionosfera nos protege de la radiaci?n c?smica. Se espera que los agujeros se cierren de nuevo, pero la experiencia con la capa de ozono hace pensar lo contrario. Esto quiere decir que hay agujeros considerables en la ionosfera que nos protege.

Debido a sus considerables efectos sobre el medio ambiente, HAARP es un asunto de inter?s mundial y debe cuestionarse si las ventajas de este sistema realmente son superiores a los riesgos. Hay que investigar los efectos ecol?gicos y ?ticos antes de proseguir con la investigaci?n y los ensayos. HAARP es un proyecto casi desconocido y es importante que la opini?n p?blica sepa de qu? se trata.

El HAARP est? vinculado a 50 a?os de investigaci?n espacial intensiva de marcado car?cter militar, incluyendo el proyecto "guerra de las estrellas", para controlar la alta atm?sfera y las comunicaciones. Este tipo de proyectos deben considerarse como una grave amenaza para el medio ambiente, con un impacto incalculable sobre la vida humana. Incluso ahora, nadie sabe el impacto que podr? tener el proyecto HAARP. Debemos luchar contra el secreto en la investigaci?n militar. Hay que fomentar la transparencia y el acceso democr?tico a los proyectos de investigaci?n militar y el control parlamentario de los mismos.

Una serie de leyes internacionales (el Convenio sobre la prohibici?n de la utilizaci?n militar o de cualquier utilizaci?n hostil de las t?cnicas de modificaci?n el medio ambiente, el Tratado Ant?rtico, el Tratado sobre los principios que rigen las actividades de los Estados en la exploraci?n y utilizaci?n del espacio exterior, incluyendo la luna y otros cuerpos celestes, as? como el Convenio de las Naciones Unidas sobre la ley del mar) ponen en duda no s?lo la base humanitaria y pol?tica del proyecto HAARP sino tambi?n su base jur?dica. El Tratado Ant?rtico dispone que el Ant?rtico debe utilizarse exclusivamente para fines pac?ficos (26). Esto significa que el proyecto HAARP infringe el Derecho internacional. Todas las implicaciones de los nuevos sistemas de armas deben ser investigadas por ?rganos internacionales independientes. Deben elaborarse tambi?n nuevos acuerdos internacionales para proteger al medio ambiente de su destrucci?n innecesaria en tiempo de guerra.

Impacto de las actividades militares sobre el medio ambiente

No s?lo los sistemas de armas sino todas las actividades militares tienen en general consecuencias sobre el medio ambiente, incluso los ejercicios que se realizan en tiempo de paz. Ahora bien, cuando se debate la destrucci?n medioambiental no se menciona en general el papel de los militares, sino que se critica ?nicamente el impacto sobre el medio ambiente de la sociedad civil. Hay por lo menos dos explicaciones de esto (27). Las actividades militares son m?s dif?ciles de discutir debido al secreto que las rodea y es dif?cil enfrentar las m?s altas prioridades nacionales, la seguridad y la defensa, con el medio ambiente. Hoy en d?a, cuando las cat?strofes naturales y medioambientales constituyen una grave amenaza a la seguridad, este argumento se ha vuelto m?s dudoso.

Las fuerzas armadas se esfuerzan en tiempo de paz por prepararse para situaciones de guerra de la manera m?s realista posible. Por ello, realizan sus maniobras en condiciones similares a las condiciones de guerra, lo que implica una enorme presi?n sobre el medio ambiente. Un ejemplo de ello es la retirada de las tropas sovi?ticas y las bases militares abandonadas en la Europa Central y Oriental, que han dejado una profunda huella en el medio ambiente local. Los ejercicios militares implican da?os generalizados al paisaje y a la vida animal. Los ejercicios con tropas someten extensas ?reas de tierra a una destrucci?n medioambiental generalizada. Los campos de ejercicio de la artiller?a y de misiles t?cticos exigen extensas ?reas para fines militares. De la misma manera, la producci?n de municiones y la industria de fabricaci?n de equipos militares causan considerables problemas medioambientales.

Las fuerzas armadas son responsables de la emisi?n de gases que afectan al clima, principalmente di?xido de carbono, pero tambi?n la incineraci?n de combustibles f?siles y las emisiones de freones, que destruyen la capa de ozono (28). El consumo de queroseno es una de las principales fuentes de emisi?n de sustancias acidificantes como los ?xidos de nitr?geno y el ?xido de azufre. Las fuerzas armadas representan una gran parte de todo el consumo de queroseno y producen una gran parte de todas las emisiones de aviones (29). Los aviones que vuelan a gran altitud, as? como los misiles, causan un impacto especialmente perjudicial sobre el medio ambiente, tanto en forma de ruido como de emisiones de combustible. Todos los misiles que utilizan combustible s?lido emiten grandes cantidades de ?cido clorh?drico y cada vuelo de una nave espacial inyecta aproximadamente 75 toneladas de clorina, que destruye el ozono; de la misma manera, el ruido causado por los ejercicios militares en los que se utiliza munici?n de gran calibre puede tambi?n destruir el medio ambiente.

Los ejercicios de tiro contaminan la naturaleza con metales. A menudo se utilizan grandes cantidades de munici?n de peque?o calibre que contiene plomo y se dispersan en la naturaleza grandes cantidades de este metal. Por desgracia, no existe una investigaci?n exhaustiva sobre el consumo de metales.

Las consecuencias en forma de problemas medioambientales causados por el desarme es un fen?meno que s?lo se ha observado recientemente. Cada a?o, se destruyen, principalmente de forma industrial, grandes cantidades de explosivos. La munici?n que, por distintas razones, no puede destruirse de esta manera, debe hacerse explotar. Evidentemente, el desarme es necesario y positivo pero debe efectuarse de una forma que respete el medio ambiente. Deben desarrollarse tecnolog?as limpias para la destrucci?n de armas.

Algunas naciones ya han empezado a aprovechar la oportunidad de utilizar recursos militares para restaurar el medio ambiente destruido por las fuerzas armadas. Todos los sectores de la sociedad deben responsabilizarse del medio ambiente y el sector militar no debe ser una excepci?n. Como en otros sectores de la sociedad, las cuestiones medioambientales deben ser parte integral de las actividades de las fuerzas armadas y deben incluirse en los procesos presupuestario y de toma de decisiones. En mayo de 1993, el programa de las Naciones Unidas para el medio ambiente (PNUMA) instaba a los gobiernos nacionales a establecer leyes nacionales para el sector militar, "aplicaci?n de normas medioambientales a las actividades militares". Finlandia, por ejemplo, ha elaborado un "Libro Verde" para regular el impacto de las actividades militares en el medio ambiente. Lo mismo ha hecho Suecia (30). En junio de 19996, Suecia elabor? tambi?n, junto con los EE.UU., directrices medioambientales para las actividades medioambientales (31). Las fuerzas armadas deben establecer objetivos medioambientales y proponer medidas para contribuir a la reducci?n del impacto sobre el medio ambiente de conformidad con la Agenda 21 y la Declaraci?n de R?o (32). Tambi?n deben presentar informes en los que se definan los factores que afectan al medio ambiente dentro de las fuerzas armadas. Antes de comenzar nuevos proyectos y de adquirir material para uso militar o civil deben realizarse evaluaciones de su impacto ambiental. NASA: S-L-O-W To Spit Out The Truth

In the June 17, 2002 issue of the American Free Press newspaper, a bold headline caught my attention: "NASA Confirms Weather-Shaping Chemtrails". What?? Could it be? Do I dare believe my eyes? NASA is confirming that chemtrails are real? Naturally, I had to read this article written by Mike Blair.

You betcha, the good ole boys at NASA are FINALLY admitting what many of us already know and have been saying for quite some time - that chemtrails are not only REAL, but are also wreaking their deleterious effects on weather conditions. Well, whaddaya know? It must be a holiday or something. Gee, maybe if they REALLY try, they will even come across with the truth about HAARP someday in this lifetime. I can only dream.

If we assume the "glass-is-half-full" attitude, we might say that this sloooow admission is "progress" since governmental agencies have notoriously denied the existence of chemtrails despite Representative Dennis Kucinich legitimizing them in House Resolution 2977 as a form of "exotic weaponry" back in October, 2001. Sometimes I think if Jesus came down off the cross and declared that chemtrails are real, there would still be some moron to argue with Him about it. Duh.

The American Free Press article further states that NASA researchers (in all their wisdom, I'm sure) have even "concluded that this POLLUTION can create cirrus clouds." Did you read that, folks? NASA called chemtrails POLLUTION. Ahhh, maybe next time they'll grow a ball and call it just what it is - POISON. Moreover, NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia went on to say that these artificially created cirrus clouds "have an impact on climate because they spread over large areas and effectively trap sunlight". Woohoo!! NASA began this latest bit of "research" after the events of 9/11/2001, so ten months of "study" and NASA has managed to officially connect the first dot or two. Bravo, fellas. It's nice to see ya catching up with the rest of us - finally.

Blair's article continues on to say NASA "came to its startling conclusions while conducting research while all NON-MILITARY aircraft were grounded" in the initial days following the events of September 11th. First of all, "startling conclusions?" Why is NASA startled at all? NASA has known about chemtrails all along. After all, isn't it NASA that obtained and holds the U.S. patent numbered 3813875? Why, YES, it is!!! Gee, maybe they forgot or something, ya think? They procured this patent in 1974. It is linked with a program that utilizes BARIUM for the purpose of creating ion clouds in our atmosphere. Fancy that. But NASA is "startled" to conclude that chemtrails are affecting our climate, eh?

According to AFP, Patrick Minnis, a senior researcher at Langley, stated that the man-made "cirrus clouds are already having an impact on climate, increasing temperatures on regional levels as much as two to five percent." Hmmm ... I wonder how long it will take my chemtrail debunker knuckledraggers to smear and eat their own? Think they'll be calling Minnis a kooky conspiracy theorist anytime soon? We'll see, won't we?

If an astronaut were ever to corroborate an aspect of my writings, I would have expected it to be in regard to planetary matters. Surprisingly, such a corroboration concerns, of all things, the Olmecs of ancient Mexico.

The unexpected corroboration is tucked away in the recently published book A Leap of Faith by the Mercury-7 astronaut Gordon Cooper, in which his story as a test pilot and astronaut is peppered with (to quote from the dust jacket) "his strong views on the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence -- and even the distinct possibility that we have already had contact."

The Olmec Enigma

Readers of my books, and especially of The Lost Realms, as well as of a previous article on this website titled "The Case of the Missing Elephant," know by now that beginning with the discovery of a colossal stone head in 1869, an advanced civilization that preceded the Mayas and Aztecs of Mexico came to light. Its leaders and bearers were unmistakably black Africans. They were arbitrarily named by archaeologists "Olmecs"; and their embarrassing enigma -- of who they were, and how they had come across the ocean, and why, was compounded by the timing of their arrival in the New World.

Once it was conceded (very grudgingly!) that the 'Olmecs' did indeed represent the earliest or even Mother Civilization of Mesoamerica, the date of their arrival was at first set at about 250 B.C.; then at about 500 B.C.; then farther back and back, until 1500 B.C. was acknowledged.

But I have argued for a date twice as old!

A God and His Secret Number

My conclusion that the Olmec presence in the New World went back at least 5,000 years, to circa 3000 B.C., was reached by many paths. The first one was an attempt to identify the great god of Mesoamerica, the Winged Serpent (Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs, Kukulkan to the Mayas), and the significance of his promise to return to those lands on the first day of a 52-year cycle, (AD 1519, when the Aztec king Montezuma believed that the appearance of the Spanish conquistador Cortez was such a Return, coincided with the anticipated sacred date).

The peoples of Mesoamerica employed in addition to a practical calendar of 365 days, called the Haab, also a Sacred Calendar (called Tzolkin) of 260 days. The two cyclical calendars were conceived as two wheels with meshing teeth that turned and returned to the same spot once in 52 years; and 52 was the Sacred Number of the Winged Serpent god?

Since 52 was also the Secret Number of the god known to the Egyptians as Thoth; since Thoth as Quetzalcoatl, was the god of science and the calendar; and since Thoth was exiled from Egypt circa 3100 B.C., I have suggested that it was he who took a group of his African followers to a new land, bringing the "Olmecs" to Mesoamerica.

Accordingly, I said, Olmec presence goes back to at least 3000 B.C. -- a date twice as old as that conceded by established archaeologists.

The Mysterious "Day One"

By the time I was writing The Lost Realms, the book devoted to the prehistory of the Americas, I was sure that the arrival of the Olmecs with Thoth/Quetzalcoatl could be established with astounding precision. The key to unlocking the enigma was the Olmec Calendar.

In addition to the Haab and the Tzolkin, there was in Mesoamerica a third calendar, used to inscribe dates on monuments. Given the name the Long Count, it was not cyclical as the other two, but linear -- a continuous one, counting the total number of days that had passed since the counting began on a mysterious Day One.

By means of glyphs denoting groups of days
(1, 20, 360, 7,200 or even 144,000) and dots
and bars giving the number for each group-glyph, monuments were dated by saying: A total of so many days from Day One have passed when this Monument was erected.

But what was that Day One, when did it occur, and what was its significance?

It has been established beyond doubt that this Long Count calendar was the original Olmec calendar; and it is now generally agreed that Day One was equivalent to August 13, 3113 B.C.

But what does that date signify? As far as I know, the only plausible answer was provided by me: It was the date of Thoth/Quetzalcoatl's arrival, with his followers in Mesoamerica!

The Unexpected Corroboration

All official publications continue, however, to remain at 1250 B.C. -- 1500 B.C. at most -- as the date of the start of the Olmec presence.

Imagine my pleasant surprise to come across an eye-witness report by the astronaut Gordon Cooper in chapter 11 of his book A Leap of Faith. "During my final years with NASA," he writes, "I became involved in a different kind of adventure: undersea treasure hunting in Mexico." One day, accompanied by a National Geographic photographer, they landed in a small plane on an island in the Gulf of Mexico; local residents pointed out to them pyramid-shaped mounds, where they found ruins, artifacts and bones. On examination back in Texas, the artifacts were determined to be 5,000 years old!

"When we learned of the age of the artifacts," Cooper writes, ?we realized that what we'd found had nothing to do with seventeenth-century Spain... I contacted the Mexican government and was put in touch with the head of the national archaeology department, Pablo Bush Romero."

Together with Mexican archeologists the two went back to the site. After some excavating, Cooper writes,

"The age of the ruins was confirmed: 3000 B.C. Compared with other advanced civilizations, relatively little was known about this one --called the Olmec."

Proceeding to describe some of the amazing discoveries about the Olmecs and their achievements, Gordon Cooper continues thus:

"Engineers, farmers, artisans, and traders, the Olmecs had a remarkable civilization. But it is still not known where they originated... Among the findings that intrigued me most: celestial navigation symbols and formulas that, when translated, turned out to be mathematical formulas used to this day for navigation, and accurate drawings of constellations, some of which would not be officially 'discovered' until the age of modern telescopes."

It was this, rather than his experiences as an astronaut, that triggered Gordon Cooper's "Leap of faith": "This left me wondering: Why have celestial navigation signs if they weren't navigating celestially?? And he asks: If ?someone? had helped the Olmecs with this knowledge, from whom did they get it?

My readers, of course, know the answers.

Has the Cover-up Ended?

The outstanding museum on the Olmec civilization in Jalapa, in the Veracruz province of Mexico, included when it was built a wall panel showing the extent and dates of Mexico's various cultures. On my first visit there, I could hardly believe my eyes: The first (earliest) civilization, that of the Olmecs, was shown as begun circa 3000 B.C.!

I urged the members of my group to take pictures of me pointing to the date: Finally, the date claimed by me has been officially accepted!

On a second visit, however (to which the previous article, The Case of the Missing Elephant relates), not only the telltale elephant-toy disappeared; the Olmec column starting at 3000 B.C. was also gone... And the official Museum Catalogue, reviewing the Olmec civilization, reverted to 1500 B.C.

But now comes the astronaut Gordon Cooper, and innocently and inter-alia tells, as an eye-witness, what he was told by the chief Mexican archaeologist: 3000 B.C.

And thus, when all is said and done, I stand vindicated.

The Maronite Christians who for generations deemed themselves custodians of the site (before they were displaced by the Shiite Moslems) told legends of the ?giants? who had built the colossal platform. I found the answers in the ancient Sumerian texts, and related them in The Stairway to Heaven and The Wars of Gods and Men.

The great stone platform was indeed the first Landing Place of the Anunnaki gods on Earth, built by them before they established a proper spaceport. It was the only structure that had survived the Flood, and was used by Enki and Enlil as the post-Diluvial headquarters for the reconstruction of the devastated Earth.

It is the only structure on Earth from before the Flood.

In 1894 Nicolas Notovitch published a book called The Unknown Life of Christ.
He was a Russian doctor who journeyed extensively throughout Afghanistan, India,
and Tibet. Notovitch journeyed through the lovely passes of Bolan, over the Punjab,
down into the arid rocky land of Ladak, and into the majestic Vale of Kashmir of
the Himalayas. During one of his jouneys he was visiting Leh, the capital of Ladak,
near where the buddhist convent Himis is. He had an accident that resulted in his
leg being broken. This gave him the unscheduled opportunity to stay awhile at the
Himis convent.

Notovitch learned, while he was there, that there existed ancient records of the life of Jesus Christ. In the course of his visit at the great convent, he located a Tibetan translation of the legend and carefully noted in his carnet de voyage over two hundred verses from the curious document known as "The Life of St. Issa."

He was shown two large yellowed volumes containing the biography of St. Issa. Notovitch enlisted a member of his party to translate the Tibetan volumes while he carefully noted each verse in the back pages of his journal.

When he returned to the western world there was much controversy as to the authenticity of the document. He was accused of creating a hoax and was ridiculed as an imposter. In his defense he encouraged a scientific expedition to prove the original tibetan documents existed.

One of his skeptics was Swami Abhedananda. Abhedananda journeyed into the arctic region of the Himalayas, determined to find a copy of the Himis manuscript or to expose the fraud. His book of travels, entitled Kashmir O Tibetti, tells of a visit to the Himis gonpa and includes a Bengali translation of two hundred twenty-four verses essentially the same as the Notovitch text. Abhedananda was thereby convinced of the authenticity of the Issa legend.
In 1925, another Russian named Nicholas Roerich arrived at Himis. Roerich, was a philosopher and a distinguished scientist. He apparently saw the same documents as Notovitch and Abhedananda. And he recorded in his own travel diary the same legend of St. Issa. Speaking of Issa, Roerich quotes legends which have the estimated antiquity of many centuries.

... He passed his time in several ancient cities of India such as Benares. All loved him because Issa dwelt in peace with Vaishas and Shudras whom he instructed and helped. But the Brahmins and Kshatriyas told him that Brahma forbade those to approach who were created out of his womb and feet. The Vaishas were allowed to listen to the Vedas only on holidays and the Shudras were forbidden not only to be present at the reading of the Vedas, but could not even look at them.

Issa said that man had filled the temples with his abominations. In order to pay homage to metals and stones, man sacrificed his fellows in whom dwells a spark of the Supreme Spirit. Man demeans those who labor by the sweat of their brows, in order to gain the good will of the sluggard who sits at the lavishly set board. But they who deprive their brothers of the common blessing shall be themselves stripped of it.

Vaishas and Shudras were struck with astonishment and asked what they could perform. Issa bade them "Worship not the idols. Do not consider yourself first. Do not humiliate your neighbor. Help the poor. Sustain the feeble. Do evil to no one. Do not covet that which you do not possess and which is possessed by others."

Many, learning of such words, decided to kill Issa. But Issa, forewarned, departed from this place by night.

Afterward, Issa went into Nepal and into the Himalayan mountains ....

"Well, perform for us a miracle," demanded the servitors of the Temple. Then Issa replied to them: "Miracles made their appearance from the very day when the world was created. He who cannot behold them is deprived of the greatest gift of life. But woe to you, enemies of men, woe unto you, if you await that He should attest his power by miracle."

Issa taught that men should not strive to behold the Eternal Spirit with one's own eyes but to feel it with the heart, and to become a pure and worthy soul....

"Not only shall you not make human offerings, but you must not slaughter animals, because all is given for the use of man. Do not steal the goods of others, because that would be usurpation from your near one. Do not cheat, that you may in turn not be cheated ....

"Beware, ye, who divert men from the true path and who fill the people with superstitions and prejudices, who blind the vision of the seeing ones, and who preach subservience to material things. "...

Then Pilate, ruler of Jerusalem, gave orders to lay hands upon the preacher Issa and to deliver him to the judges, without however, arousing the displeasure of the people.

But Issa taught: "Do not seek straight paths in darkness, possessed by fear. But gather force and support each other. He who supports his neighbor strengthens himself

"I tried to revive the laws of Moses in the hearts of the people. And I say unto you that you do not understand their true meaning because they do not teach revenge but forgiveness. But the meaning of these laws is distorted."

Then the ruler sent to Issa his disguised servants that they should watch his actions and report to him about his words to the people.

"Thou just man, "said the disguised servant of the ruler of Jerusalem approaching Issa, "Teach us, should we fulfill the will of Caesar or await the approaching deliverance?"

But Issa, recognizing the disguised servants, said, "I did not foretell unto you that you would be delivered from Caesar; but I said that the soul which was immersed in sin would be delivered from sin."

At this time, an old woman approached the crowd, but was pushed back. Then Issa said, "Reverence Woman, mother of the universe,' in her lies the truth of creation. She is the foundation of all that is good and beautiful. She is the source of life and death. Upon her depends the existence of man, because she is the sustenance of his labors. She gives birth to you in travail, she watches over your growth. Bless her. Honor her. Defend her. Love your wives and honor them, because tomorrow they shall be mothers, and later-progenitors of a whole race. Their love ennobles man, soothes the embittered heart and tames the beast. Wife and mother-they are the adornments of the universe."

"As light divides itself from darkness, so does woman possess the gift to divide in man good intent from the thought of evil. Your best thoughts must belong to woman. Gather from them your moral strength, which you must possess to sustain your near ones. Do not humiliate her, for therein you will humiliate yourselves. And all which you will do to mother, to wife, to widow or to another woman in sorrow-that shall you also do for the Spirit."

So taught Issa; but the ruler Pilate ordered one of his servants to make accusation against him.

Said Issa: "Not far hence is the time when by the Highest Will the people will become purified and united into one family."

And then turning to the ruler, he said, "Why demean thy dignity and teach thy subordinates to live in deceit when even without this thou couldst also have had the means of accusing an innocent one?"

From another version of the legend, Roerich quotes fragments of thought and evidence of the miraculous.

Near Lhasa was a temple of teaching with a wealth of manuscripts. Jesus was to acquaint himself with them. Meng-ste, a great sage of all the East, was in this temple.

Finally Jesus reached a mountain pass and in the chief city of Ladak, Leh, he was joyously accepted by monks and people of the lower class .... And Jesus taught in the monasteries and in the bazaars (the market places); wherever the simple people gathered--there he taught.

Not far from this place lived a woman whose son had died and she brought him to Jesus. And in the presence of a multitude, Jesus laid his hand on the child, and the child rose healed. And many brought their children and Jesus laid his hands upon them, healing them.

Among the Ladakis, Jesus passed many days, teaching them. And they loved him and when the time of his departure came they sorrowed as children.

1 The words of Issa spread among the pagans in the midst of the countries he traversed, and the inhabitants forsook their idols.

2 Seeing which the priests exacted of him who glorified the name of the true God, reason in the presence of the people for the reproaches he made against them and a demonstration of the nothingness of their idols.

3 And Issa made answer to them: "If your idols and your animals are powerful and really possessed of supernatural strength, then let them strike me to the earth."

6 "And it is not against pieces of stone, metal, or wood, which are inanimate, that the anger of God will have full course; but it will fall on men, who, if they desire their salvation, must destroy all the idols they have made.

7 "Even as a stone and a grain of sand, naught as they are in the sight of man, wait patiently the moment when he shall take and make use of them,

8 "So man must await the great favor that God shall accord him in his final judgment.

9 "But woe unto you, ye enemies of men, if it be not a favor that you await but rather the wrath of the Divinity-woe unto you if ye expect miracles to bear witness to his power.

10 "For it will not be the idols that he will annihilate in his anger but those who shall have erected them. Their hearts shall be consumed with eternal fire, and their lacerated bodies shall go to satiate the hunger of wild beasts.

11 "God will drive the impure from among his flocks, but he will take back to himself those who shall have gone astray through not having recognized the portion of spirituality within them."

12 Seeing the powerlessness of their priests, the pagans had still greater faith in the sayings of Issa and, fearing the anger of the Divinity, broke their idols to pieces. As for the priests, they fled to escape the vengeance of the populace.

13 And Issa further taught the pagans not to strive to see the Eternal Spirit with their eyes but to endeavor to feel him in their hearts and by purity of soul to render themselves worthy of his favors.

14 "Not only," said he unto them, "abstain from consuming human sacrifices, but immolate no creature to whom life has been given, for all things that exist have been created for the profit of man.

15 "Do not steal the goods of your neighbor, for that would be to deprive him of what he has acquired by the sweat of his brow.

16 "Deceive no one, so as not to be yourselves deceived. Endeavor to justify yourself before the last judgment, for then it will be too late.

17 "Do not give yourselves up to debauchery, for that would be to violate the laws of God.

18 "You shall attain to supreme happiness, not only in purifying yourselves, but also in guiding others in the way that shall permit them to gain original perfection."

1 The neighboring countries resounded with the prophecies of Issa, and when he entered into Persia the priests became alarmed and forbade the inhabitants to listen to him.

10 "'The sun rises in order to warm you during your work; it sets to allow you the repose which I myself have appointed.

12 "But," said the priests, "how could a people live according to the rules of justice if it had no preceptors?"

13 Then Issa answered, "So long as the people had no priests, the natural law governed them, and they preserved the candor of their souls.

14 "Their souls were with God, and to commune with the Father they had recourse to the medium of no idol or animal, nor to the fire, as is practiced here.

15 "You contend that one must worship the sun, the spirit of good and of evil. Well, I say unto you, your doctrine is a false one, the sun acting not spontaneously but according to the will of the invisible Creator who gave it birth

16 "And who has willed it to be the star that should light the day, to warm the labor and the seedtime of man.

17 "The Eternal Spirit is the soul of all that is animate. You commit a great sin in dividing it into a spirit of evil and a spirit of good, for there is no God outside the good,

18 "Who, like unto the father of a family, does but good to his children, forgiving all their faults if they repent them.

19 "The spirit of evil dwells on the earth in the hearts of those men who turn aside the children of God from the strait path.

Crop circles, Glowing Orbs, and Scalar Interferometers

Scalar interferometry may explain many unusual phenomena that are being sighted. Two immediately come to mind, the glowing orbs that are being seen in the skies around the world, and the crop circles. Both phenomena could be easily accomplished with the new scalar superweapons. Balls of plasma flying through the sky at phenomenal speeds may well be the "marker beacons" of the scalar weapons. Marker beacons are created for fine tuning the aiming of the devices. Air Force jets were recently sent aloft from Edwards AFB to chase two just glowing orbs. After chasing them a while, the orbs simple vanished. That is to say, the scalar beams creating the orb were turned off.

By feeding a graphic pattern into the aiming software such a plasma ball could be made to trace out that pattern, at the distant interference zone (target zone), making the standing crops fall over, creating a crop circle. Remember there are many modes and effects of these weapons. They are really the engineering of reality itself.

If Tom Bearden's information is correct then we will have to reexamine world affairs in a new light, seeing the maneuvering of those forces who possess the new weapons. For one thing, there is no defense against such weapons other than having the weapons oneself.

The pages on this website about Christ in Kashmir are based upon the assumption, that Jesus survived the crucifixtion. These assumptions is based on several scriptures: The apocryphal texts and non-canonized gospels found in Qumran, Israel and Nag Hamadi, Egypt, scriptures found in Tibetan monestaries, historians over the centuries, inscriptions in temples and at the Rozabal Mausolaeum, the Sanskrit texts Bahavishya Maha Purana and Rajatarangini, Persian texts and last but not the least: The age old oral tradition from the different parts of India and other countries, where Jesus is supposed to have been. Where the local people long time ago had seen a man, "With fair hair and a face shining like the sun, who called Himself, the son of God."

Jesus Christ was an enlightend master without attachments of any kind to either places, people or things. He was a travelling saint, who spread "The Word" Himself. The knowledge about "The Kingdom to come", which is as difficult to understand today, as it was for His closest disciple, he taught himself. It is likely and very well documented, that Jesus Himself created the world religion, that we know today, by travelling and teaching in most of the known world of those days.

Faith and belief is challenged, but is lack of faith in the historical evidences, not deep down lack of faith in Him?

Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments. Indeed, only six such events have occurred since the invention of the telescope (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882). The next two transits of Venus will occur on 2004 June 08 and 2012 June 06.

The principal events occurring during a transit are characterized by contacts. The event begins with contact I which is the instant when the planet's disk is externally tangent with the Sun. The entire disk of the Venus is first seen at contact II when the planet is internally tangent with the Sun. During the next several hours, Venus gradually traverses the solar disk at a relative angular rate of approximately 4 arc-min/hr. At contact III, the planet reaches the opposite limb and is once again internally tangent with the Sun. The transit ends at contact IV when the planet's limb is externally tangent to the Sun. Contacts I and II define the phase called ingress while contacts III and IV are known as egress. Greatest transit is the instant of minimum angular separation between Venus and the Sun as seen from Earth's geocenter.

Figure 1 (Low Res or High Res) illustrates the geocentric observing geometry of each transit across the Sun (celestial north is up). The 2004 transit crosses the Sun's southern hemisphere while the 2012 event crosses the northern hemisphere. The position of Venus at each contact is shown along with its path as a function of Universal Time. Each transit lasts over six hours. The apparent semi-diameters of Venus and the Sun are 29 arc-seconds and 945 arc-seconds respectively. This 1:32.6 diameter ratio results in an effective 0.001 magnitude drop in the Sun's integrated magnitude due to the transit. Geocentric contact times and instant of greatest transit appear to the left corners of figure 1 (Low Res or High Res).

Of special concern among these were the military planes whose functions were delineated in some very considerable detail and which read today like something clean out of science fiction. For instance, they had to be:

Aerial battles and chases are common in ancient Hindu literature.

What did these airships look like? The ancient Mahabharata speaks of a vimana as ?an aerial chariot with the sides of iron and clad with wings.? The Ramayana describes a vimana as a double-deck, circular (cylindrical) aircraft with portholes and a dome. It flew with the ? speed of the wind?, and gave forth a ?melodious sound?

The ancient Indians themselves wrote entire flight manuals on the care and control of various types of vimanas. The Samara Sutradhara is a scientific treatises dealing with every possible facet of air travel in a vimana. There are 230 stanzas dealing with construction, take-off, cruising for thousands of miles, normal and forced landings, and even possible collusions with birds!

Would these texts exist (they do) without there being something to actually write about? Traditional historians and archaeologists simply ignore such writings as the imaginative ramblings of a bunch of stoned, ancient writers.

Says Andrew Tomas, " The Samara Sutradhara, which is a factual type of record, treats air travel from every angle?If this is the science fiction of antiquity, then it is the best that has ever been written.?

In 1875, the Vaimanika Shastra, a fourth century BC text written by Maharshi Bhardwaj, was discovered in a temple in India. The book dealt with the operation of ancient vimanas and included information on steering, precautions for long flights, protection of the airships from storms and lightning, and how to switch the drive to solar energy, or some other ?free energy? source, possibly some sort of ?gravity drive.? Vimanas were said to take off vertically or dirigible. Bharadwaj the Wise refers to no less than 70 authorities and 10 experts of air travel in antiquity. These sources are now lost.

The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ - The Life of Saint Issa - Translation by Nicolai Notovitch, 1896298 viewsThe book is the in two distinct parts. The St Issa scroll is mentioned repeatedly by 'Jesus in India' scholars and was ground breaking in starting to piece together the life of Jesus.

Recent attempts to obtain the scroll and gain more information about it have failed.
During the latter part of the 1870s, Notovitch decided to embark on an ?extended journey through the Orient.?

In 1887 Notovitch visited the famous Golden Temple at Amritsar India, eventually moving on to Ladak. He went to Kargil where he began a horseback trek on his way to Leh, the capital of Ladak. At a place called Mulbek near the Wakha River, he decided to visit two monasteries, one of which was Buddhist, located above a hill. There he met a Lama, and the two conversed about religion. At one point in the conversation, the monk stated:

"We also respect the one whom you recognize as Son of the one God. The spirit of Buddha was indeed incarnate in the sacred person of Issa [Jesus], who without aid of fire or sword, spread knowledge of our great and true religion throughout the world. Issa is a great prophet, one of the first after twenty-two Buddhas. His name and acts are recorded in our writings."

Notovitch then left the area, but while riding his horse near Hemis Monastery, Notovitch suffered a terrible fall from his horse and broke his right leg, and he was forced to remain under the care of the Buddhist monks at Hemis until his leg healed. During this time he had the scrolls read to him and his translators translated it for him. Notovitch took notes, and this formed the core content for his book. Read extracts here.

The Name Issa [top]

Kersten states that the name ?Isa?, or ?Issa?, derives from the Syrian, Yeshu (Jesus), ?being altered to conform to Musa (=Moses).? It is very interesting that Jesus is referred to as ?Issa? in Buddhist documents, as ?Isa? in the scripture of Islam, the Quran, and as ?Isa? in the Hindu scripture, the Bhavishya Mahapurana.

That the religious documents of these three religions mention Jesus as ?Isa? suggests that this was actually a name by which he was known in the East. Buddhism and Hinduism predate Islam.

If you are looking for an ancient manuscript on this fascinating topic, you'll need to keep on looking. The Vymanika Shastra was first committed to writing between 1918 and 1923, and nobody is claiming that it came from some mysterious antique manuscript. The fact is, there are no manuscripts of this text prior to 1918, and nobody is claiming that there are. So on one level, this is not a hoax. You just have to buy into the assumption that 'channeling' works.

The Vymanika Shastra, however, is not a myth. In recent years, I had seen the English text reproduced in Vimana Aircraft of Ancient India & Atlantis (ISBN 0932813127), published by Adventures Unlimited, which I highly recommend for the fascinating background material on vimanas. However, that edition waffles a bit as to when the VS was actually first published. It also omits the first half of the book, consisting of over a hundred pages of Sanskrit, which, in my mind at least, is the most notable part of the book. And the original edition is almost unobtainable. Now I was face to face with an offer to purchase a first edition, at $160. That is probably on the low side; probably because the book looks so terrible, but (as will become clear below) that is probably the case with any copy of the 1973 edition. So I didn't hesitate.

The story of this book is as follows: sometime in the period just before World War I, a Brahman named Pandit Subbaraya Sastry began to dictate previously unknown texts in Sanskrit which purported to contain ancient Indian technological knowledge. He in turn, credited a Vedic sage named Maharshi Bharadwaja, as well as other Rishis who appear in legitimate Hindu texts.

One of these 'channeled' texts was, on its face, a technical manual for the construction and use of 'vimanas,' the flying machines of the Vedic sagas. It is unclear as to whether any part of the present work was actually published in print at that time, even though it is implied in the introduction, so it is unclear whether it was published (in the legal sense) prior to 1923. The Sanskrit manuscript of the VS lay unpublished for over fifty years. In 1973, this text was published in a very limited edition by G.R. Josyer, along with a translation which he had produced over a twenty year period. In 1991, the English portion and the illustrations from the Josyer book were reprinted in the above-mentioned Vimana Aircraft of Ancient India & Atlantis.

It as if someone in the early 20th century wrote a 100 page book on ancient aircraft in Biblical Hebrew and attributed it to Moses and other prophets. However, the fact that the book was originally written in Sanskrit, while very impressive, isn't any indication of authenticity. Sanskrit is to some extent still a living language, used everyday in Hindu ritual. It is plausible that a well-educated high-caste Hindu from that period would be able to compose a Sanskrit text of this length given enough time.
Atha Jaatyadhikaranam: Varieties of Vimaanas.

According to the differences in yugas, there are three different types of planes:

Having dealt with the constituent mechanical parts of the Vimaana, we shall now deal with the Vimaanas according to their different classes.

The sootra indicates that there are different types of planes, and that they are of 3 types.

In the Krita Yuga, Dharma or Righteousness was four-footed, that is, it was four-square, fully established, all paramount, and it was adhered to implicitly by men. The men were inherently noble-born and were possessed of remarkable powers. Without needing to go through yogic discipline to attain special powers, or practise mantras which secured extraordinary results, the men of that yuga, merely by their devotion to dharma, became Siddhapurushaas or gifted with superhuman powers. They were virtuous men and men of learning and wisdom. Going in the sky with the speed of wind by their own volition was natural to them. The eight super-sensory, and now superhuman, attainments, known as animaa, mahimaa, garimaa, laghimaa, praaptih, praakaamya, eeshatwa, and vashitwa, were all possessed by them. That is, animaa is assumption of infinitesimal shape; mahimaa is growing into gigantic shape; garimaa is becoming astonishingly heavy; laghimaa is becoming weightless; praaptih is securing any desired thing; praakaamyam is becoming rid of desires; eeshatwa is attaining paramountcy; and vashitwa is becoming extremely pliant.

Therefore in Krita Yuga, or first epoch, the ancients say, there were none of the three classes of Vimaanas.

Krita Yuga passed; and Tretaa Yuga commenced. Dharma then became limp of one foot. It served with 3 feet only, and grew gradually less efficient. So men's minds became dense, and the conception of Vedic truths, and anima and other super-sensory powers, became scarcer. Therefore, by the corrosion of Dharma or righteousness, men lost the power of flying in the sky with the speed of wind.

Perceiving this, God Mahadeva, desiring to confer the power of understanding the Vedas properly on the Dwijas, or brahmins, kshatriyas, and vysyas, graciously descended on earth in the form of Dakshinaamurthy, and through the instrumentality of Sanaka and other anointed sages, classified the Veda mantras, and then bestowing his benedictory glance on the worshipping Munis or ascetics, he blessed them with the gift of Vedic perception. And then to ensure that they were properly receptive, he embraced them and entered their hearts and illuminated their memories. The munis, overwhelmed by the Divine grace, aglow with horripilation, with voice choked with emotion, praised the Supreme with shata-rudreeya and other hymns, and manifested profound devotion.

Pleased with their receptiveness, divine Dakshinaamurthy, favouring them with a benign glance, and with smile on his face, said to them, "Till now you have been known as "Munis" or ascetics. Henceforth, having by my grace attained insight into the Vedas, you shall be known as "Rishis" or seers. You will cultivate the Vedic mantras, and practising celibacy, you will adore the divine Goddess of the Vedas, and winning her favour, and approaching the Great God Easwara by Yogic Samadhi, ascertain His mind, and by His and my grace, rising to the pinnacle of intellectual vision, become adepts in the meaning and purport of the Vedas; and confirming by them your own experiences and meditative introspection, you will create the Dharmashaastras or moral codes, Puranas and Itihaasas, and physical and material sciences, in conformity to the truths of the Vedas, for the benefit of mankind. And for travelling in the sky, propagate the art of manufacturing Vimaanas, and for attaining wind-speed, evolve Ghutica and Paadukaa methods through Kalpashaastras or scientific treatises."

Then those munis or seers, enshrining in their hearts God Mahadeva in the form of Dakshinaamurthy, produced the Dharmashaastras or ethical codes, epics, chronicles, manuals on rituals, treatises on the arts and sciences, ritualistic and sacrificial codes, in conformity to the Vedas, and propagated them among men. Amongst them it is said that there are six treatises bearing on the manufacture of Vimaanas produced by the ancient seers. In them are described three classes of vimaanas, known as maantrikaas, taantrikaas, and kritakaas, capable of flying everywhere.

It is said in Vimaana Chandrika,

"I shall indicate the different kinds of vimaanas. In Tretaa yuga as men were adepts in mantras or potent hymns, the vimaanas used to be produced by means of maantric knowledge. In Dwaapara yuga as men had developed considerable tantric knowledge, vimaanas were manufactured by means of tantric knowledge. As, both mantra and tantra are deficient in Kaliyuga, the vimaanas are known as kritaka or artificial. Thus, owing to changes in dharma during the yugas, the ancient seers have classified the vimaanas of the 3 yugas as of 3 different types."

"Vyomayaana Tantra" also says,

"By the influence of mantras in Tretaa, vimaanas are of maantrika type. Owing to the prevalence of tantras in Dwaapara, the vimaanas are of taantrika type. Owing to decadence of both mantra and tantra in Kaliyuga, the vimaanas are of artificial type." Thus 3 classes of vimaanas are mentioned in shaastras by ancient seers.

In "Yantra Kalpa" also,

"Vimaanas are classified into mantra and other varieties by experts according to differences in yugas. They are defined as maantrika, taantrika, and kritaka."

The same is expressed in "Kheta yaana pradeepika," and also "Vyoma Yaana Arkaprakaashikaa."

Thus according to shaastras vimaanas are divided into 3 classes, on the basis of differences in the modes of their manufacture.

Maharshi Bharadwaaja:

☞ "Pancha-vimshan Maantrikaaha Pushpakaadi Prabhedena" Sootra 2.

"Maantrika Vimaanas are of Pushpaka and other 25 Varieties."

Bodhaananda Vritti:

In the previous sootra vimaanas were specified as of 3 types owing to differences in the 3 yugas. In this sootra maantrika vimaanas or vimaanas flying by maantrik power are said to be 25.

Shounaka Sootra says,

Maantrika vimaanas in Tretaayuga are 25. Their names are pushpaka, ajamukha, bhraajasvat, jyotirmukha, kowshika, bheeshma, shesha, vajraanga, dyvata, ujvala, kolaahala, archisha, bhooshnu, somaanka, panchavarna, shanmukha, panchabaana, mayoora, shankara, tripura, vasuhaara, panchaanana, ambareesha, trinetra and bherunda.

In Maanibhadrakaarikaa,

The vimaanas of Tretaayuga are 32 of the maantrika type. Their names as given by Maharshi Gowtama are Pushpaka, ajamukha, bhraaja, swayamjyoti, kowshika, bheeshmaka, shesha, vajraanga, dyvata, ujvala, kolaahala, archisha, bhooshnu, somaanka, varnapanchaka, shanmukha, panchabaana, mayoora, shankara priya, tripura, vasuhaara, panchaanana, ambareesha, trinetra, and bherunda, etc.

Maharshi Bharadwaaja:

☞ "Bhyravaadi Bhedaat Tantrikaa-shshat-panchaashat." Sootra 3.

"Taantrika Vimaanas are of Bhyrava and other 56 varieties."

Bodhaananda Vritti:

In previous sootra the names of maantrika vimaanas were mentioned: In this sootra the names of taantrika vimaanas of Dwaapara yuga are mentioned.

In shape, movement and speed there is no difference between maantrika and taantrika vimaanas. There is however one difference in taantrika vimaanas, that is, the way in which the shakti or power at the junction of sky and earth is incorporated.

Lalla also says,

There is only one difference between taantrika vimaanas and maantrika vimaanas: the adaptation of the power of sky and earth. In shape, and movement. variations, they are identical. The taantrika vimaanas are of 56 varieties.

In Shounaka Sootra,

In Dwaapara taantrika vimaanas are 56. These 56 are taantrika vimaanas of Dwaaparayuga.

"Shakuna and other 25 types of Vimaanas are Kritakaah."

Bodhaananda Vritti:

In shape and movements there is no difference in the vimaanas, except in the matter of the use of mantraas and tantraas. The kritaka or artificial vimaanas are of 25 varieties.

According to Shownaka sootra

"Tishyay kritaka bhedaah panchavigamshatih! teshaam naamaanyanukramishyaamah: shakuna sundararukma mandala vakratunda bhadraka ruchaka vyraaja bhaaskara gajaavarta powshkala virinchi nandaka kumuda mandara hamsa shukaasya somaka krownchaka padmaka symhika panchabaana owryaayana pushkara kodandaa iti."

Says "Maanibhadra Kaarikaa":

In Kaliyuga, the kritaka or artificial vimaanas are said to be 25. Their names are given below as indicated by sage Gowtama: shakuna, sundara, rukmaka, mandala, vakratunda, bhadraka, ruchaka, viraajaka, bhaaskara, gajaavarta, powshkala, viranchika, nandaka, kumuda, mandara, hamsa, shukaasya, sowmyaka, krownchaka, padmaka, symhika, panchabaana, owryaayana, pushkara, and kodanda.

Maharshi Bharadwaaja:

☞ "Raaja-lohaadeteshaam Aakaara Rachanaa." Sootra 5.

"These should be built out of Raajaloha."

Bodhaananda Vritti:

These 25 kinds of vimaanas are to be made of Raajaloha metal only.

Says Kriyaasaara,

In manufacturing artificial aeroplanes the best of metals are those known as Ooshmapaa or heat-imbibing or heat resisting metals. Out of them the variety known as Raajaloha or king of metals is most suited to Shakuna and other vimaanas.

Three kinds of metals, soma, soundaala, and maardweeka, in the proportion of 3, 8, and 2, adding borax, to be filled in crucible or smelter, and placed in furnace, and heated to 272 degrees, and melted thoroughly, and churned, will result in the alloy Raajaloha.

Vishwambhara also says,

"In the science of metals, for the manufacture of aeroplanes, 16 types of Ooshmapaa or heat-sucking lohas or metals are the very best. The fourth in that series, is called Raajaloha. Out of that alone should shakuna vimaana be constructed."

The parts of shakuna vimaana are:

Peetha or floor board; hollow mast; three wheeled keelakas with holes; 4 heaters, air-suction pipes, water jacket, oil tank, air heater, chhullee or heater, steam boiler, vidyud-yantra or electric generator, air propelling yantra, vaatapaa yantra or air-suction pipe, dikpradarsha dhwaja or direction indicating banner, shakuna yantra, two wings, tail portion for helping vimaana to rise, owshmyaka yantra or engine, kiranaakarshana math or sun-ray attracting bead. These 28 are parts of Shakuna vimaana.

The construction of the vimaana:

The floor-board or base should be made of levelled Rajaloha sheet, shaped quadrangular, circular, or cradle shaped. The weight of the peetha should be one-hundredth of that of the plane, and its width should be half the height of the vimaana. In the centre of the peetha the hollow mast should be fixed with screw joints.

Lalla defines the mast in "Yantra kalpataru". The stambha or mast should be made of haatakaasya metal and not otherwise.

Haatakaasya metal is described in "Lohatantra": 8 parts of suvarchala or natron, 16 parts of laghu-kshwinka or light zinc, 18 parts of lagbu bambhaari, and 100 parts of copper, filled in smelter, placed in koorma vyaasatika furnace, and with the aid of mahormi bellows boiled to 307 degrees, will yield haatakaasya metal.

The Peetha

The height of the peetha should be 80 feet. It should be 56 feet in length and breadth, 70 feet high on the north and south sides. The tip should be three-cornered. This is for shakuna vimaana.

Naalastambha or Hollow Mast:

At the bottom the mast should be of 35 feet diameter outside, and 30 feet inside. At the middle the mast should be of 25 feet diameter outside and 20 feet inside. Higher up it should be of 20 feet diameter outside and 15 feet diameter inside; The height of the mast should be 80 feet. It should be made of Raajaloha. In order to fix the mast in the peetha screw joint should be made. And in order to adjust the air-speed as required, 6 wheels should be inserted inside the mast.

The Wheels:

Inside the mast at the height of 4 feet above the peetha, three wheels should be provided, of 15? feet diameter, with holes. The wheels above and below should be fixed with bolts, and unmoving. In order to revolve the middle wheel keys should be fixed outside on the mast, As there are holes in the wheels, as two wheels do not move, and as the middle wheel revolves in a group with the other two wheels, movement of air is, allowed or stopped by the turning of the key outside.

Similarly at the height of 44 feet above the peetha three wheels corresponding to those below should be fixed and operated similarly.

Window dome:

The window dome should be of 15? feet outside circumference. Its inside should be five feet wide and it should be 2 feet high. It should be fixed on the top of the mast.


A sun crystal 7 feet round, and 2 feet wide and 2 feet in height should be fixed so as to crown the window dome.

10 feet above the bottom peetha, on a floor-board 3 inches thick, three floors or tiers should be built, each 14 feet high, with 3 inch

floor-boards, the upper two floors being supported by pillars fixed at 10 feet intervals with screw joints and strong bolts. In the four corners 4 heating yantras should be fixed, 10 feet in circumference and 8 feet high. On the ground floor along the supporting pillars accommodation for passengers should be provided in the form of individual boxes.

On the second floor booths should be constructed to accommodate the anga-yantras, or the various mechanisms recommended for the safety of the vimaana. It should be 60 feet wide and 14 feet high with 3 inch thick ceiling board.

The third floor should be 40 feet wide and 14 feet high.

The partitioning boxes for passengers as well as the booths of the various machines should be divided off by railings starting from the hollow mast to the side walls in all the four directions.

Beneath the ground-floor board a 7 feet high cellar should be constructed. In it the several necessary yantras should be located. In the centre is the foot of the hollow mast. On the four directions from it 4 air pumping machines should be fixed. In order to stimulate them 4 steam engines also should be installed. On the two sides of the vimaana two air expelling machines, and an air heater machine, and 2 machines to keep the heater supplied with air from outside, should be erected.

In order to enable the wings on either side to spread and flap, proper hinges and keys should be provided for, safely fixing them to the sides of the vimaana, and for enabling them to fold and open easily.

The revolving tractor blades in the front should be duly fixed to the heating engine with rods so that they could dispel the wind in front and facilitate the passage of the vimaana.

The wings are two, one on each side, very strongly fixed to the vimaana with bolts and hinges. Each wing should be fixed in a 11 foot scabbard up to 20 feet length, where it would be 10 feet wide, widening further up to 40 feet at the end of its 60 feet length, besides its. first 20 feet of scabbard length.

The tail should be 20 feet long, and 3? feet wide at the start, and 20 feet wide at the end.

The air-blower and heater:

The length of the air-blower should be 15 feet, and width 3 feet. The naalaas or pipes should be 3 feet wide, and their outer circumference should be 4 feet. The rods and hinges and other equipment should be suitably prepared.

The vaatapaa yantra or air blower should be 12 feet long and 9? feet wide. Inside it should be covered with circling wires. A pipe should be fixed inside, for air flow. By the hot oil fumes from the heated tank, the air becomes heated and should be passed into the owshmya yantra or heater, while the cold air from outside should also be let in. Tubes and fixings should be provided in the yantra. In order to emit the fumes of the oil flames to the outside, a 6 inches pipe should be fixed from the yantra to the foot of the mast. Air blowers should be installed with 10 feet wheels to pump in fresh cold air from outside.

To the east of the air machine should be placed a light burner in order to aid combustion of the oil. An electric generator provided with switches should light the burner. When the light is off the oil should be kept duly sealed. A rope should be tied to the tail joint, for the pilot to manipulate the fluttering of the tail to help the ascent or descent of the vimaana. Similarly ropes should be tied to the hinges of the two wings, and passed to the pilot like reins, so that he might spread them out or close them as needed.

Ten feet beneath the passenger floor of the vimaana, to a height of 2? feet from the bottom plate there should be a cellar-like enclosure. The bottom of the vaatanaala mast should be fixed in its centre with firm screw joints. In this cellar should be located two oil tanks 15 feet by 9? feet by 4 feet, with water jackets.

Four bellows of 15 feet by 2? feet by 6? feet, should be provided for storing the air pumped in by the air-blowers, and letting it out as required.

And underneath, on all the four sides wheels of 7 feet circumference should be fixed for the movement of the vimaana on the ground.

This vimaana is named SHAKUNA VIMAANA.

Bodhaananda Vritti:

Next Sundara vimaana will be described. It has got 8 constituent parts.

First peetha or ground plate, smoke chimney, 5 gas-engines, bhujya metal pipe, wind blower, electricity generator, and four-faced heater, and vimaana nirnaya, or outer cover.

The Peetha or ground plate:

It should be made of Raajaloha metal only. It should be square or round, and of 100 feet in circumference, or any other desired size. It should be 8 feet thick. Seven times the peetha has to be heated with manchuka or madder root oil. Then spots should be marked in it at 10 feet distance from each other, totalling 24. The size of each kendra or centre is 15 feet. In the centre a dhooma-prasaarana or fume distributing naala or pipe 12 feet high should be erected.

Naalastambha, hollow mast:

The naalastambha should be 56 feet high, and 4 feet in diametre. For storing gas, at its base, a 8 feet long, circular, and 4 feet high vessel should be provided. A six feet size water vessel should be arranged. A 4 feet size oil tank should be fixed at its centre. At its foot an electric storing crystal of 1 foot size should be fixed with necessary hinges and keys.

The vessel should be filled with 12 parts of dhoomanjana oil, and 20 parts of shukatundika or bignonia Indica? (egg-plant?) oil, and 9 parts of kulakee or red-arsenic oil. To conduct electricity, two wires should be passed through the pipe and fixed to the crystal. In the middle of the naalastambha or mast, for the smoke fumes to be restrained or speeded out, triple wheels with holes should be fixed. In order to work the wheels from outside, two right turning and left turning wheels

should be attached outside the pole, and connected to the wheels inside. Three wires should be drawn inside the naala and fixed at the foot, the middle, and at the top.

Dhoomodgama Yantra:

Because it ejects smoke fumes with speed it is called Dhoomodgama yantra.

Hima samvardhaka, soma, and sundaala, in the proportion of 32, 25, and 38, should be filled in pipe crucible, placed in chakra-mukha furnace, and with the help of ajaamukha bellows heated to 712 degrees and properly churned. It will yield excellent dhooma-garbha alloy. With that alloy the dhoomodgama yantra should be constructed.

Underneath the centre of the 15 feet long peetha, for the control of the gas fumes a 10 feet high pipe with right revolving wheel should be fixed. On its 2 sides, to south and north, 2 water steam pipes should be erected. At the foot of the 2 pipes 4 feet long 3 feet high pots should be formed for containing the fumes. Two pipes shaped like goblets, 1 foot by 8 feet by 3 feet, should be fixed at the top of the fume container. A water vessel at its foot, and an oil-vessel at its centre, and in front of it the switches of the electric ray crystals, as in the dhooma prasaarana naala stambha.

On either side of the heat tube, two water jackets should be placed. A pipe with wires should be taken from the electric generator and connected to the hinges of the crystals. Electric current of 80 linkas should be passed to the crystals, whose motion will cause friction and generate heat of 100 degrees (kakshyas). Thereby the oil in the vessel will get heated and boil and emit fumes.

The electric power should then be passed through the smoke pipe between the two water jackets. By this the water will be converted into hot steam. The oil fumes should be filled in the oil fume pipe and the steam in the steam pipe. Then by operating the switches, both the fumes will fly up at 500 degree temperature. The switches should restrain the fumes or pump them out as needed. 40 such yantras should be prepared and should be fixed on the peetha in groups on

the four sides. Then connected with the bases of the dhooma-naalas, sundaalas or elephant trunks, one foot wide and 12 feet high should be erected on the four sides, to enable the vimaana to fly with speed.

Sundaala is described by Lallachaarya:

The sundaala should be installed. for using the oil fumes and steam fumes for the motion of the vimaana. There are. varieties of ksheera vrikshaas or milk-trees according to shaastraas. Vata or banyans, manjoosha or madder root, maatanga or citron?, panchashaakhee (five branched), shikhaavalee (crested), taamra sheershnee (copper-crested), brihatkumbhee (big bellied), mahishee, ksheeravallaree, shona parnee (crimson-leaved), vajramukhee, and ksheerinee (milky). From these the ooze or milk should be collected, and in the proportion of 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 8, 7, 4, 7, 30, 12, filled in a vessel. Then granthi metal, naaga or lead, vajra, bambhaarika, vynateya, kanduru, kudapa, and kundalotpala, these in equal parts should be filled in the vessel in equal proportion to the milk contents, and boiled with 92 degree heat. Then the molten liquid should be filled in the milk-cloth machine, and churned. When cooled and put through the levelling machine, it will yield a strong, soft, cool, heat proof, and uncuttable ash-coloured cloth sheet.

This cloth should be boiled in rouhinee taila or oil of black hellebore for 3 yaamaas or 9 hours, and then washed with water. Then it should be boiled in atasee or linseed oil as before. Then it should be kept in ajaa-mootra or goat's urine for one day and kept in the sun. Then it should be dried and painted with kanakaanjana paint and dried, Then the cloth will glow with a golden hue. With this cloth should be made the shundaala or elephant trunk, 12 feet high, 1 foot round, and with pipe-like opening inside.

Two mechanisms for rolling it and unrolling it should be properly attached to it. By the rolling switch the shundaala will coil round like a snake and remain on the floor. By the unrolling switch it will uncoil and stand erect like a raised arm. From the fume generating yantra connecting links to the shundaala should be provided for the fumes to pass through it to the outside air. And to attract outside air into the sundaala a pump-like arrangement should be provided as in an inflator.

Three switches should be provided as in the water tapping yantra. By revolution of its wheel the fumes will go out through the shundaala and 82 linka of fresh air will come in. The direction in which the fumes will emerge from the shundaala will be the direction of the course of the vimaana. The 3 wheels in the shundaala will cause the vimaana to wheel around or make ascent, or to drop height.

At the foot of each dhoomodgama yantra 2 shundaalas should be duly fixed. And on the 4 sides of the dhoomaprasaarana-naala-stambha 4 shundaalas should be erected.

In order to protect against the intense heat from fire and sun inside and outside the vimaana, it should be provided a covering made of the 6th type of Ooshmapaa loha or heat-proof metal. At the top and bottom and on the sides keys should be provided for the movement of the fumes. 40 such dhoomodgama yantras should be properly fixed in the selected spots of the peetha with screw fittings. The vimaana will be enabled to fly smoothly by so doing.

Says Yantra Sarvasva:

There are 32 kinds of yantras for generating electricity, such as by friction, by heating, by waterfall, by combination, by solar rays, etc. Out of these, saamyojaka or production by combination is the one most suitable for vimaanas. Its manufacture is explained by Sage Agastya in Shaktitantra:

The peetha or foot-plate should be made of saamyojaka metal, 35 feet in diametre. 5 spots should be marked in it in a circle, 5 feet in diametre, with a spot in the centre. Vessels should be prepared for each kendra, 4 feet wide, 2 feet high, shaped like a pot. On each a cylindrical pipe 1 foot wide and 1 foot high, should be fixed. The top of the cylinder should be 4 feet wide and round.

Then get a Jyotirmukha or flame-faced lion's skin, duly cleaned, add salt, and placing in the vessel containing spike-grass acid, boil for 5 yaamas or 15 hours. Then wash it with cold water. Then take

oils from the seeds of jyothirmukhee, or staff-tree, momordica charantia, and pot herb, in the proportion of 3, 7, and 16, and mix them in a vessel, add 1/64 part of salt. The skin should be immersed in this oil and kept for 24 days in solar heat. It will get a scarlet sheen. The skin should be cut to the size of the top opening of the vessel cylinder, with 5 openings in it. Cover the cylinder with the skin with bolts. All the 5 vessels should be similarly covered, and placed in the 5 selected centres on the peetha. Then 16 drona measures of asses' urine, 16 linka measures of mined charcoal, 3 linkas of salt, 2 linkas of snake-poison, and 2 linkas of copper, should be filled in the vessel on the eastern side.

Then in the vessel on the western side, 7 vidyudgama mani or load-stone, 13 praana-kshaara or ammonium chloride, 22 hare-dung, should be filled. and made into a decoction. Two parts of camel urine should be mixed with one part of the above. Then 50 linkas of rhinoceros bones, 30 linkas of sulphur, and 16 linkas of tamarind tree salt, and 28 linkas of steel should be added to that. And 117 tatin-mitra manis should be placed in the centre of the vessel.

Next the following materials should be filled in the northern vessel:

Eleven parts of oil of apaamaarga or achyranthus aspera seeds, 32 parts of oil seeds of sarpaasya or mesua ferrea, 40 parts of ayaskaantha or oil of steel, in 83 parts of elephant's urine, all these to be put in the northern vessel and mixed together properly. Then add mercury, symhika salt, and paarvanika or bamboo rice, 30, 20, and 25 palas respectively, or 120, 80, and 100 tolas. Sun-crystal of the 800th type, mentioned in Maniprakarana, cleaned in oil, should be put in the vessel.

Next in the vessel on the southern side, put in grandhika draavaka or long-pepper decoction, panchamukhee draavaka, and shveta-punja or white liquorice decoctions, in proportion of 12, 21, and 16, and mix together, add cows' urine 5 parts more than the above liquids, 47 parts of jyotirmayookha root, 28 linkas of kaanta metal, 28th and 10th kind of kudupa 32 parts. 92 jyotirmanis purified in milk should be placed in it, according to Chaakraayani. This is the southern vessel.

Then in the central vessel electric current should be stored. That vessel should be made of chapala-graahaka metal only.

Chapala-graahaka metal is explained in Lohatantra:

Quick-lime, marble stone, lac, sowraashtra earth, glass, root of the elephant trunk tree, bark of karkata tree, cowries, cubeb pepper gum, in the proportion of 8, 11, 7, 27, 8, 5, 3, 7, and 12 parts of tankana or borax, to be filled in urana crucible, placed in kundodara furnace, and with 3 faced bellows, boiled to 427 degrees, will yield, when poured into the cooler and cooled, chapalagraahaka metal.

The electricity storage vessel should be manufactured as follows: A foot-plate 5 feet long, 8 feet high, 1 foot thick, half-moon shaped, should be made of above metal. The vessel should be shaped like a big pot, with a cylindrical top. It should have a glass covering. 2 pipes 3 feet wide 6 feet high should be fixed in the vessel in the northern and southern sides. They should also be covered with glass. Between the two pipes two wheels with hinges and switches etc. should be fixed. When the switches are put on or turned, causing the two wheels to revolve, electricity will flow from the bottom of the 4 vessels into the two pipes and ascend. Two tubes, 6 inches long, should be prepared, wound round with deer skin, tied with silk thread or silk cloth. The Vajramukhee copper wires cleaned with acids, should be passed through each tube, and taken to the two pipes in the vessel and be fixed with glass cups. 8 palas or 32 tolas of mercury should be placed in the energy container vessel. 391st vidyunmukha mani, wound round with copper wiring with mixing switch, should also be inserted. Then taking the wires in the pipes they should be connected with the wiring of the mani through the kaachakanku hole. In each of the vessels, excepting the middle one, two churning rods should be fixed in the centre. The rods should be made of steel or shakti skandha. They should be 3 feet high and 1 foot thick. Keys should be fixed in them for obverse and reverse churning. To the east of the churning machine wheels should be fixed for raising and lowering. An 8 inches high naala or tube should be fixed. On either side of it should be fixed 5 wheels of 5 inches height, like the wheel of the water lifting machine. 2 inches wide flat pattis made of shakti skandha metal should be passed from the wheels inside the Aavritta-naala to the keys of the wheels in the churning yantra. Then revolving wheels should be attached to the naalas or tubes of the stambha or big pipe. By the turning of these keys, it will operate like the turning of the churning

rod back and forth as in churning curds by drawing and relaxing the rope ends.

Then according to Darpana-shaastra, four vessels, shaped like the bamboo cylinder used on the pounding mortar, should he made out of ghrinyaakarshana glass or solar-heat absorbing glass and fixed on the mouth of the 4 vessels.

The vessel is described by Lallaacharya: 8 inches wide and 1 foot high, and then 2 feet wide and 6 feet high, and at the top a 6 feet wide mouth.

25 palas or 100 tolas of bamboo salt, should be put in it. Then amsupaa mani or solar-ray crystal of the 325th kind, duly cleaned in acid, should be put in it with rice salt. Then rice hay should be spread over it tightly, and facing the sun. The rays from all sides are imbibed by them, and will enter the vessel daily to 105 degrees' strength. If kept thus in the sun for 12 days, 1080 linkas of electric power will be accumulated in each vessel.

In order to store this power in the storage vessel six inches long steel tubes should connect the bottom of the vessel with the storage vessel. They should be covered by deer skin and wound round with silk cloth or yarn. Two copper wires should be passed through the tubes and connected to the storage vessel. 100 palas of mercury should be put in the vessel. And a 391th type of sun crystal duly wired should be placed in the mercury, and the wires coming from the tubes should be connected to it.

The well-oiled keys in the 4 vessels should be revolved with speed, to 200 degrees heat, when the liquids in the vessels will be boiled by the heat rays. Then the keys should be hastened up to 2000 degrees. By the liquids in each vessel 800 linkas of electricity will be generated. The power should be conveyed by the wires in the kaanta metal tubes to the storage vessel. The crystal will absorb and fill the vessel with the power. In front of the storage vessel a five feet long, 3 feet high circular vessel should be installed. It should be covered all round with the bark of vaari-vriksha.

Always water will be flowing in it. So instead of water, water skin is indicated. It will give the vessel the effect of water-immersion. Then in that vessel glass cups containing the decoction of shikhaavalee or lead-wort? or achyranthes aspera?, 18 parts of ayaskaanta or loadstone? or steel acid?, and 12 parts of vajrachumbaka acid, should be placed. Then power should be drawn from the storage vessel through the wires inside the glass-covered tube, and 4 wires with glass wheel key be let into the acid vessels. Then from the bottom of the vessels 2 wires fitted with keys should be taken in a right circle to the front of the smoke-outlet stambha or pipe, and attached to the wires inside the bhujyu metal tube. The wires should also be connected to the keys of the electric friction crystals in the dhoomodgama stambha or pillar, as also to the key in the stambha. Thereby electricity will be spread in all parts of the vimaana. Therefore the vidyud-yantra or electrical machine should be installed in the left side of the vimaana.

Vaata-prasaarana Yantra
Air Spreading Machine.

Kriyaasaara says:

In order to enable the vimaana to ascend, vaataprasaarana yantra is necessary.

Therefore it is now being described. It should be made out of vaatamitra metal only.

Lohatantra describes vaatamitra loha. 13 parts of rasaanjanika or extract of Indian berbery, 27 parts of prabhanjana, and 37 parts of paraankusha, should be filled in sarpaasya or serpent-faced crucible, placed in chakramukha furnace, and with the aid of vaaranaasya bhastrika or bellows, heated to 216 degrees. Then filled in the sameekarana yantra or churner, and next poured out and cooled, it will yield vaatamitra loha, or air-companion metal.

First the foot plate, then the naala-stambha or tubular pole, air pumping wheel with keys, air attracting bellows-like mechanism, and mechanism for contracting and expanding the mouth, out-flow and inflow tubes with keys, covering for the yantras, wind pipes, vaatodgama

pipe, bhastrikonmukha, vaatapoorakeelakas, vaata nirasana pankha keelaakas, or air-expelling fan keys, these 12 are the organs of the yantra.

The Peetha or foot plate.

The peetha should be 6 feet long, 1 foot thick, square or round, with two spots on the northern and southern side of it for erecting three-wheeled tubular poles.

The 3 wheeled naala stambha is described in "Yaana bindu":

Three feet long and 8 feet high tubular poles should be fixed on 2 sides of the peetha or foot-plate. At the foot and the middle and the top of the pole three openings should be provided for fixing 3 wheels.

In the pole should be fixed tubes, one foot wide and 2 feet long, for drawing in air, and wheels 1 foot wide with teeth as in hack-saw, revolving both ways, be fitted to the tubes. The vaata-pooraka or air-filling naala should be fixed in the middle of the wheel. By turning the fly wheel, the wheel will turn, making the naala move up and down sucking in air. The air pumping wheel keys should be thus fixed in the two poles. The keys at the mouth of the bellows should be connected to these keys.

Bellows' mouth mechanism

Taking pig-skin, duly cleaning it with putrajeevi or wild olive oil, boil it for 3 days, wash it with clean water. Smear it with gajadantika oil frequently exposing to sun for 5 days, and fashion out of it a 6 foot bellows, three feet wide at bottom, 4 feet wide in the middle, and 1 foot wide at the mouth. Two keys working conversely to each other should be fixed at the mouth. A stick should be inserted between them. The two keys should be capable of being put into quick motion, or left at rest. By turning the keelakas the piston rod is moved, and from its speed, the bellows' mouth also will start in motion, and also the vaataakarshana naala. By putting the naala at the mouth of the bhastrika or bellows, quick air entry from inside the mouth will occur. By starting all the keelakaas in all the centres there will be airflow in the three wheel tubular stambhas. By turning the

keelakas with 20 heat-degree force, in the naala stambhas air will rush out with 100 shaker speed. From the bellows' mouth also air will blow with 2000 prenkhana or shaker speed. And these air flows will speed the motion of the vimaana. Therefore in front of the vaatodgama yantra 12 such yantras should be installed on the four sides, 3 on each side. And aavarana or covering should be provided for them according to their measurements. And 12 naala stambhas, 3 feet wide and 12 feet high, should be prepared, and fixed on the top covering of the yantras, for the air to flow out. From each stambha air will blow with 2600 prenkhana speed. The yantras are individually prescribed so that some may rest when not required. The high flight will be helped by these machines. Having thus described the individual sources of air supply for the vimaana, we shall now describe the Brihat-stambha or main mast.

It should be 4 feet wide and 30 feet high, and called vaatodgama naala stambha. It should be erected centrally amidst all the yantras. The bhastrikonmukha yantras should be fixed at the foot of the stambha so that the air flows from the yantras could pass into the stambha. The wind-naalaas or pipes should be connected to the stambha-moola fitted with keys. At the opening of the naala-stambha at the top on the 8 inch wide opening a vessel one foot high and 3 feet wide should be fixed. The wind from the stambha or tunnel will pass out through it in wavy billows. The dhoomodgama yantra or smoke pipe should, be provided with triple keys or fixtures, for the expulsion of smoke. and blowing in of air. By operating those keelakas the supply of smoke and air could be controlled according to need. Wind expelling fan wheels should be put in, so that by their quick motion the motion of the vimaana could be facilitated.

Covering of the Vimaana

Covering the dhoomodgama yantras and kudyaas or side walls, as in the case of the Shakuna Vimaana, the covering of the Sundara vimaana should be done by raajaloha only. The covering should accommodate the number of partitions or booths required as in Shakuna Vimaana. The location of the 32 component yantras should be determined.

[paragraph continues] In the centre of the booths for locating the four-faced heat machinery, a thirty feet square area should be set apart.. There the four-faced heat yantra should be erected.

Says Yantrasarvasva:

The chaatur-mukha owshnya yantra should be made out of kundodara metal only. Kundodara metal is defined in Lohasarvasva.

Soma, Kanchuka, and shundaala metals in the proportion of 30, 45, and 20 to be taken, cleaned and filled in padma crucible, placed in chhatramukha furnace, and with vaasukee bellows heated to 716 degrees, aa-netraanta, and poured into the yantra for cooling. A blue, fine, light, alloy, capable of bearing 2000 degree heat, and which cannot be blasted even by shataghnee and sahasraghnee canons, and very cold, is kundodara alloy. With this alloy the owshnyaka yantra should be fashioned.

Yantraangas or parts of the Machine.

Peetha or foot-plate, smoke container kunda or vessel, water container, fire oven, turret covering, covering of water container, twin wheels for projecting and restraining smoke, window rods, padmachakras or wheels, aavritta chakra keela, heat indicator, speedometer, time clock, ravaprasaarana keelaka naala or sound transmitting instrument, antardandaaghaata naala, air-bellows, long sundaala pipes, twin copper pipes, air dividing wheel keys, these 18 parts constitute the ooshmyaka yantra.

The peetha, tortoise-shaped, should be 25 feet long and wide. At peethaadi or starting end should be fixed the agni-kosha or fire place, the water vessel in the middle, and the smoke-container should be fixed at the other end.

The 3 koshaas are explained by Budila:

Ravi or copper, manchoulika, and tigma in equal parts should be mixed with kundodara metal, and be made into 3 inches thick pattika or flats. One pattika should be fixed on the peetha. In the fire place, kendra on the peetha a 4 feet long 6 feet high fire-place should be made. For stocking coal or wooden billets, a sort of walled table should be formed. Next a triangular fire-place should be formed,

with rods at the bottom for the ashes to fall down. In between the 2 parts the flat sheet should be fixed, fitted with keelakas or hinges for moving the peetha as desired. Three keelakas should be fixed at the fire place, one to fan the flames and straighten them, one to moderate or stimulate the flames, and one to distribute the flames evenly. A naala or pipe should be fixed on the fire kosa. Another pipe with wiring, is to be fixed at the end of the fire-kosa pattika with a smoke transmitting pipe which will convey the smoke of the fire-place to the jalakosa or water container. From the fire kosa to the covering of the water kosa water pipes should be adjusted. In the water kosa enclosure the heat will rise to 5000 linkas in these tubes. The heated water will then give out hot smoke.

The size of the jalakosa or water container is 8 feet. Three triple-wheeled naalas or pipes should be fixed in the jalakosa: one to restrain the heated smoke from the water, one to amass the smoke, and one to lead the smoke into the dhoomakosa or smoke-container. The Dhoomakosa should be 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. In order to fill the kosha with smoke, necessary fittings should be provided. Above the jalakosa a dome-like covering should be erected. It should be provided with fittings, for folding up and opening out. To the front of the smoke container, two pattikaa wheels with holes should be fixed in order to let out the smoke or to restrain it. In order to operate the wheels two bhraamanee keelakaas or revolving switches should be provided. To the east of the Dhooma-kunda, 8 inches long window bars should be fixed with one inch spacings. Then in front of the yantra, in the middle, at top, at bottom, and on both sides, twin padmachakra keelakas should be fixed for spreading the smoke or restraining it. For storing the wood or coal a hole 11 feet wide should be arranged. The door covering it should be provided with needful fittings. To the north and south of the keelaka the heat-measure and speedometer should be fixed. Above them the timepiece. To the south, a telephonic device called ravaprasaarana or sound ringer, which will give alarm with 1212 sound wave speed, and which gives warnings for the plane's moving, halting, speeding, overspeeding, and danger imminence. An equipment with 5 holes giving 5 different sounds to indicate the above should be installed. On either side of the above, two 6 inches wide, 26 feet tall, Aaghaatha-naalas or pipes should be fixed. Between them two 5 inches thick metal rods are to be adjusted. At the foot, middle, and top of the naalas revolving

wheel keelakas should be fitted. By their revolving, the rods will strike each other. That will increase the speed of the plane. On the top of the naala pipes, air bellows with fittings should be fixed. Thereby the air force in the naalas will shoot up, and the speed of the vimaana will double. Then on the four sides of the heated smoke kosha or container, shundaalas or elephant-trunk-like pipes should be fixed with wheeled keys as in vaatodgama yantra. By filling the shundaalas with the smoke and turning the keys as required, the movement of the vimaana in one direction or another, its gaining height and speeding out or halting, will be facilitated. Keys should be adjusted so as to make the shundaalas coil down like a water hose or keep erect. Two pipes made of 3rd division copper should he wound round the agnikosa, water kosa, and smoke kosa, or fire, water and smoke koshas, in order to absorb the excessive heat in them.

In order to part the wind in front of the vimaana, vaata-vibhajana chakra keela or wind-dividing-wheel fittings should be fixed.

Having thus prepared the chaaturmukhoshmyaka yantra, or four-faced heating machine, it should be installed in the centre of the vimaana. By the air, smoke, and heat of the yantras below, the ascent and flight of the vimaana will be facilitated.

Regarding the speed of the vimaana, we have to consider the speed of smoke and other accessories mathematically, and conclude the possibility of the speed of the vimaana. The speed of the smoke from dhooma yantra is 2113 linkas. The speed of wind from the air blowing machine 2500 linkas. Wind from the naala-stambha blows at the speed of 600 linkas. This is the speed of the forces from the 3 machines on the peetha. Of the forces from the upper portion of the vimaana, from the chatur-mukhoshmyaka yantra, heat force of 3400 linkas emanates. By the four-faced heat yantra, and by operating the keys of the shundaalas, and the force of the wind, smoke and heat machines, the vimaana would be capable of a speed of 400 yojanas or 3600 miles.

This is Sundara Vimaana, and it has been described after consulting ancient works, and according to my humble capacity, says Maharshi Bharadwaaja.

Next the principles of Rukma Vimaana.

Bodhaananda Vritti:

This vimaana is of golden colour. Therefore it is called Rukma vimaana, Rukma meaning gold. The Rukma should be made out of Raajaloha only. By duly processing, Raajaloha can be made to assume golden colour. That metal should be used for the vimaana.

"Yaana-Bindu" says,

"After first producing golden colour for Raajaloha, the vimaana should be formed."

"Varna-sarvasva" mentions the colouring process:

Praana-kshaara or ammonium chloride 4 parts, wild Bengal gram 32 parts, shashakanda (or lodhra?) benzoin? 18 parts, naaga or lead 20 parts, sea-foam 16 parts, maakshika or iron pyrites 6 parts, panchaanana or iron 20 parts, paara or mercury 15 parts, kshaara-traya or 3 kinds of salt: natron, salt-petre, borax, 28 parts, panchaanana or mica 20 parts, hamsa or silver 17 parts, garada or aconite 8 parts, and panchaamrita or 5 sweets--curds, milk, ghee, sugar, honey, these should be filled in the melter, and after boiling, and drawing the liquid through two outlets, fill in the crucible and place in furnace, and blow to 800 degrees' heat, and then transfer it to the cooler.

That will be Raajaloha, pure, golden-coloured, tensile, and mild. The vimaana, made out of this loha or alloy, will be very beautiful and delightful.

The Peetha

The peetha or ground plate of the Rukma vimaana should be tortoise-shaped, 1000 feet long, and 1 foot thick, or any other desired

size. On its eight sides, 20 feet long spaces should be fixed underneath the peetha. At each centre fixtures like birds' beaks should be attached with revolving keelakas. Then double iron-balls or wheels, in couples, should be fixed in each of the 8 centres.


Lalla gives the form of ayaschakra-pinda:

12 feet long and wide, and 8 kankushtas in weight, they should be made round like a grind-stone. They should be inserted in the beaks at the 8 centres. From each chakra-pinda up to the electrical generator chain wires should be connected with switches.

Or Button-switch pole

One foot wide and 4 feet high poles should be fixed. They should have switches wired up to the electric pole. 8 inches wide wheels should be fixed in the middle of the pole, on either side, with wires. From the electric pole chain wires should enclose the wheels and be fixed in another pole with inside hinges. On the top of the poles should be fixed goblet shaped cups with button-switches like half-blooms with wheels and keys, so that on pressing the button with the thumb the wheels in the other pole will revolve from electric contact. Then the wheels in the electric pole will also revolve, producing 5000 linkas of speed.


Due to this electrical force, the ayah-pinda wheels beneath the peetha will beat against it and make it rise and move upwards. And by moving the switches of the wheeled poles above the peetha, the poles will revolve with speed, and accelerate the speed of the vimaana. By the concussion of the wheels underneath, and the action of the poles above, the vimaana will move upwards and gain height and fly with dignity.

Electric tube wheels aiding flight:

Above the peetha, naalas or tubes should be fixed at 1 foot intervals. On both sides of each naala toothed wheels 2 feet wide and 1 foot high should be fixed with proper keelakas. Taking electric wires through

the keelakas, and passing over the wheels and reaching the foot of each naala, they should be attached to wheels 3 feet wide and 3 feet high. In the midst of 20 naalas a pole should be fixed in the centre.

Narayana says:

Preparing a pillar 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, and making a 2 feet opening in its middle, fix keelakas at the top, middle, and lower end of the opening. Two keelakas with 6 wheels, with glass coverings, with wires, and naala and leather covering should be fixed at the lower end for attracting electricity. In the middle part of the opening, for transmitting the current, a five-faced keelaka should be fixed, with 5 wheels, glass covering, 2 naala tubes, two wires, attached to 3 rods, and vessel containing veginee oil. By the flow of the current the wheels in the upper end should be made to whirl by properly adjusting keys. In front of the opening a big wheel should be fixed with gumbha keelakas. Similarly wheels should be fixed at the foot of each pillar. On top of them a four inch wide pattika or flat band should be adjusted commencing from the samsarga key chakra up to the front of the electric yantra. By operating that key, power will flow through the wires, and entering the key at the foot of the pillar set the wheels in motion. On the motion of the big wheel the sandhi-wheels in the naala-dandas will also revolve with speed, and the current will enter the 5 faced keelaka, and entering the oil vessel it will gather force, and passing through the 2 naalas, set all the wheels in the pillar in forceful motion, generating 25000 linkas speed, which will give the vimaana 105 krosa or nearly 250 miles speed per ghatika, or 24 minutes.

Having dealt with the mechanism for setting the vimaana in motion, we now consider the mechanism for giving direction to the vimaana in its course. In the 8 diks or directions of the peetha, pillars made of mica and shining like panchakantha, 2 feet thick and 15 feet high should be fixed at intervals of 10 feet. On the pillars should be built the passenger seating arrangements, and booths or locations for the machinery, as in the case of the Sundara Vimaana. The pillars should be made of mica only.

Its production is given in Kriyaasaara:

Shaara-graava or lime 25 parts, kshwinkaasatva or iron-sulphate 30 parts, gunja or wild-liquorice 28 parts, tankana or borax 12 parts,

roudree moola 8 parts, chaandree or kantakaari....solanum xanthocarpum flower salt 2 part, purified shoonya or mica 100 parts,, to be filled in koorma crucible, and heated in paadma furnace with blower to 800 degrees, and then poured into the cooler, will yield mica alloy most useful and attractive. Fashioning the pillars or walls or partitions and booths, and fixing the mechanisms for turning, circling, diving, and manoeuvring, in the fore and middle and aft of the vimaana, it could be moved in any direction as desired.

Lallaacharya says:

In order to make the vimaana change its course from one path to another or one direction to another, revolving keelakas should be fixed on the eight sides of the vimaana. Two keelakas should be made, purva and apara, or right side and left side. They should be fitted together.

By operating it, the vimaana could be made to change its course one way or another. In order to operate the keelaka, at the peetha moola, on the 4 sides crescent shaped naalaas or tubes, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high should be fixed. 4 inches long metal rods should be fixed inside the naalaas on either side. One foot wide and 1 foot high wheels should be fixed in them. They should be wired all around. Such crescent naalas should be fixed on the 4 sides of the peetha. In order to set the wheels in the naalas in motion big wheels should be fixed at the beginning, middle, and end of the naalas. By turning the top wheel with speed the wheels inside the naalas will revolve. That will force the keela-shankus to twist round so as to force the vimaana to change its course in the required direction.

"Next Tripura."

Having explained the vimaanas commencing from Shakuna to Simhikaa, Tripura vimaana will now be dealt with.

This vimaana has 3 enclosures, or aavaranas or tiers. Each aavarana is called "Pura." As it consists of 3 aavaranas it is called "Tripura" vimaana. It is operated by the motive power generated by solar rays.

Narayana also says:

The vimaana which naturally can travel on land, sea, and in the sky by alteration of its structure is called Tripura Vimaana.

It has got 3 parts. The first part can travel on land. The second part can travel under and over water. The 3rd part travels in the sky. By uniting the 3 parts by means of keelakas, the plane can be made to travel in the sky. The plane is divisible into 3 parts so that it might travel on land, sea, or air. The construction of the 1st part is now explained. Tripura vimaana should be made out of Trinetra metal only.

Trinetra loha is explained by Shaakataayana:

Jyotishmatee loha 10 parts, kaanta-mitra 8 parts, vajramukha loha 16 parts, these 3 to be filled in crucible, then adding tankana or borax 5 parts, trynika 7 parts, shrapanikaa 11 parts, maandalika 5 parts, ruchaka or natron 3 parts, mercury 3 parts, then filled in crucible in padmamukha furnace and heated to 631 degrees with trimukhee bellows, the resulting liquid, if poured into cooler, will yield a metal, shining like peacock feather, unburnable, unbreakable, weightless, impregnable by water, fire, air and heat, and indestructible.

With that metal the peetha should be prepared, of any desired size. The following is given as an example. It may be 100 feet wide

and 3 feet thick, round or square. Leaving 20 feet on the western side, at intervals of 10 feet 80 spots should be marked for wheeled boats. 80 feet long, 3 feet wide, 5 feet high boat shaped dronies or containers should be fixed on the marked lines. Three feet wide openings should be made in the top of the dronies, so as to raise the wheel inside them quickly and cover them underneath. There should be fittings which enable the wheels to be lowered on land, and raised and covered underneath when going in water. The wheels should have axle rods with fittings to attract electric power. The axle rods should be 2? feet long and 1 foot thick. The wheels should be 3 feet wide and 1 foot thick, have, 5, 6, or 7 spokes, fixed in the rims, and covered with musheeka up to 4 inches from the edge. Holes with glass coverings should be made in all the wheels. These 12 wheels, or 8, or 6, or 4, should be fixed inside the boat-like structure. For transmitting power wires made of somakaanta loha should be fixed in the holes made in the wheels. In the middle of each wheel electric aaghaata keelakaas should be fixed, and in them chhidraprasaarana keelakas. Over all the chakradronee boats, copper wire pairs should be fixed on both sides, and in the joints of the wheels. Rods should be attached to the wires so that power could be drawn from the wires and passed to the top of the wheels. And power should be passed to the wires underneath the wheels. In climbing hills, and going down slopes, by adjusting the power at the top or the bottom of the wheels, smooth progress is made possible. By adjusting the necessary keelakas it is possible to accelerate the speed, or in going down, to restrain the flow of the current, and put brake on excess speed.

For attracting power from the generator a naala or pipe with wires should be fixed at the front of the peetha through 5 faced wheel keelakas, and the wires should be connected to the fittings at the top and bottom of the wheels, with glass cups.

In order to put covering over the boat formations, pillars should be fixed between each boat line, and covered with mica sheets, as per architectural rules.

"Out of pure mica alone"

Bodhaananda Vritti:

The vimaana should be made out of pure mica alone.

Mica is described in "Dhatu sarvasva ". There are four kinds of mica, white mica, red mica, yellow mica, and black mica. The white mica has 16 varieties. Red mica has 12 varieties. The yellow mica has 7 varieties. And the black mica has 15 varieties. Thus there are 50 varieties in all.

Shownakeeya also says:

We shall now describe the nature of abhraka or mica. They are of 4 castes, like brahmin, kshatriya, vysya, and sudra. They are of 50 varieties. The brahmin mica has 16 varieties. The kshatriya mica has 12 varieties. The vysya mica has 7 varieties. And the sudra mica has 15 varieties, totalling 50 in all. Their names are as follows. The brahmin mica varieties are ravi, ambara, bhraajaka, rochishmaka, pundareeka, virinchika, vajragarbha, koshambara, sowvarchala, somaka, amritanetra, shytyamukba, kuranda, rudraasya, panchodara and rukmagarbha. The kshatriya varieties are shundeeraka, shambara, rekhaasya, owdumbara, bhadraka, panchaasya, amshumukha, raktanetra, manigarbha, rohinika, somaamshaka, and kourmika. The vysya varieties are krishnamukha, shyaamarekha, garalakosha, panchadhaara, ambareeshaka, manigarbha, and krownchaasya. The shoodra varieties are gomukha, kanduraka, showndika, mugdhaasya, vishagarbha, mandooka, thailagarbha, rekhaasya, parvanika, raakaamsuka, praanada, drownika, raktabandhaka, rasagraahaka, vranahaarika.

Out of these, pundareeka from the 1st class, rohinika from the second, panchadhaara from the third, and drownika from the 4th class are good for use in constructing the vimaana. These should first be purified as per rules.

The process of purification is given in "Samskaara Ratnaakara": skandhaaraka or salt of roitleria tinctoria?, shaaranika or rubus salt?, pinjulee or yellow orpiment?, cowries, borax, kaakajanghaa or wild

liquorice?, moss, rowdrikaa, salt-petre, douvaarika, shambara or benzoin, and phosphorus. These should be separately filled in the smelter. The decoctions should be filled in glass vessels. The mica is to be purified with each one of these.

The mica is to be powdered, put in skandhaavaara acid in smelting vessel. It should be boiled for 3 days in fire, and for 3 days in electric heat. Then take the liquid and put it in a bronze vessel, pour in shaaranika acid and keep it in sun for 3 days. Then add pinjulee acid and keep buried in earth for 5 days. Afterwards add cowri acid, and boil in bhoodhara yantra for one day. Then add mustard, and adding borax acid and burning arjuna, myrabolan wood, place it in brown-barked acacia cinders for 3 days. Then add wild liquorice acid and expose it to the full moon rays on the 14th and 15 days. The mica is to be then taken out and washed in hot water. Then add wild corn, and pouring in moss acid place it under earth for 6 days. Then take out the mica, add roudri acid, place the vessel in a big fire-place, and burn in 64 feet of dried cowdung. 3. Kecksburg, December 9, 1965.

On December 9 1965, hundreds of witnesses in southern Canada, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania observed a UFO crash from the sky. In March 1966, scientist and UFO investigator Ivan Sanderson compiled an account from various eye witness stories.

The object took six minutes to pass the observed trajectory, from which Sanderson calculated a speed of 1,600 km/h, which, if accurate, would rule out a meteor. Several pilots spoke of being buffeted by shock waves as the thing passed them. There were also stories of a sonic boom and vibrations felt on the ground. The smoke trail was so intense that it remained visible for up to twenty minutes. During the final few miles of its flight the object seemed to change course.

After the impact the police set off the forest. They were subsequently chased away by the military. A few hours later the military team told them they had found nothing.

In January 1980 UFO investigator Clark McClelland interviewed the assistant fire chief of Kecksburg, James Mayes, and Melvin Reese, another fireman. They reported that their team had come within sixty meters of the object. They had seen an object on the ground that had smashed its way through the trees. Mayes explained how the military had cordoned off the woods and had established a temporary base, complete with telecom link. Fire chief Robert Bitner later confirmed this story. He also said had seen an object that was 1.8m high, 2m wide and some 5m long, clearly not an aircraft. It was resting at an angle on the ground as if it had impacted nearly horizontally. Another fire officer, 'Pete', stated he had seen a ring of bumpers around it into which were described some pictorial symbols. Being of Polish decent he could read Russian and stated that they were not Russian.

Researcher Ray Boeche file a Freedom of Information request for more data on the incident. In 1985 30 pages of data were procured. It was insignificant information, except for a memo that said a three man team had been dispatched to the site to pick up an object. The final conclusion of the file was that the UFO was a meteor.

A theory has been proposed that the object was a crashed Russian satellite (Cosmos 96). However, NASA has released data that say that Cosmos 96 reentered Earth's orbit on December 9, 3.15 a.m. The crash took place 13 hours later.

After the US TV series Unsolved Mysteries had reported the case two new witnesses came forward. One was a USAF officer at Lockbourne AFB (near Columbus, Ohio). In the early hours of December 10, a truck arrived by the little used back gate of the base and he was ordered to patrol it. It was a flat-bed with a large tarpaulin on the surface covering a conical object. He was told to shoot anyone who tried to get too close. He was advised the truck was bound for Wright Patterson AFB, which is the reputed home of other crashed saucers.

The other witness was a building contractor who was asked two days later to take a load of 6,500 special bricks to a hangar inside Wright Patterson. When he sneaked a look inside the hangar he saw a bell-shaped device, some 4m. high sitting there. Several men wearing white anti-radiation style suits were inspecting the object. Writing resembling Egyptian hieroglyphics was also said to be in a band around the base of the object. Witnesses further reported that intense military presence, most notably the United States Army, secured the area, ordered civilians out, and then removed the object on a flatbed truck. At the time, however, the military claimed they searched the woods and found "absolutely nothing".

The Tribune-Review from nearby Greensburg had a reporter at the scene; the headline in the newspaper the next day was "Unidentified Flying Object Falls near Kecksburg ? Army Ropes off Area".

The official explanation of the widely-seen fireball was that it was a mid-sized meteor. However speculation as to the identity of the Kecksburg object (if there was one ? reports vary) also range from it being an alien craft to the remains of an unmanned Soviet Venera 4 atmospheric probe, also known as Kosmos-96, originally destined for Venus. (However, see below where this was recently ruled out by NASA's chief in charge of tracking orbital debris.)

Similarities have been drawn between the Kecksburg incident and the Roswell UFO incident, leading to the former being referred to as "Pennsylvania's Roswell".

Со слов очевидцев, вчера, 15 февраля, примерно в 18-10 местного времени в Чите в районе Телецентра в небе был замечен летящий объект. Согласно рассказам свидетелей явления, объект шел на высоте от 500 до 1000 метров, однако эти данные могут быть неточны из-за незнания истинных размеров НЛО.
Сам объект был темного цвета и имел неправильную форму, напоминающую треугольник со сглаженными углами. The Discovery [top]
During the latter part of the 1870s, Notovitch decided to embark on an ?extended journey through the Orient.?

In 1887 Notovitch visited the famous Golden Temple at Amritsar India, eventually moving on to Ladak. He went to Kargil where he began a horseback trek on his way to Leh, the capital of Ladak. At a place called Mulbek near the Wakha River, he decided to visit two monasteries, one of which was Buddhist, located above a hill. There he met a Lama, and the two conversed about religion. At one point in the conversation, the monk stated:

"We also respect the one whom you recognize as Son of the one God. The spirit of Buddha was indeed incarnate in the sacred person of Issa [Jesus], who without aid of fire or sword, spread knowledge of our great and true religion throughout the world. Issa is a great prophet, one of the first after twenty-two Buddhas. His name and acts are recorded in our writings."

Notovitch then left the area, but while riding his horse near Hemis Monastery, Notovitch suffered a terrible fall from his horse and broke his right leg, and he was forced to remain under the care of the Buddhist monks at Hemis until his leg healed. During this time he had the scrolls read to him and his translators translated it for him. Notovitch took notes, and this formed the core content for his book. Read extracts here.

The Name Issa [top]

Kersten states that the name ?Isa?, or ?Issa?, derives from the Syrian, Yeshu (Jesus), ?being altered to conform to Musa (=Moses).? It is very interesting that Jesus is referred to as ?Issa? in Buddhist documents, as ?Isa? in the scripture of Islam, the Quran, and as ?Isa? in the Hindu scripture, the Bhavishya Mahapurana.

That the religious documents of these three religions mention Jesus as ?Isa? suggests that this was actually a name by which he was known in the East. Buddhism and Hinduism predate Islam.

Notovitch - Was he Really There? [top]
There are those that say Notovitch never visited Hemis and that the St Issa scrolls do not exist, yet the following diary entry is a powerful vindication of the account of Notovitch:

"When I visited the Lamasery [Monastery] at Hemis, and together with the Lama Ishe Tundup and Mr. Stobden interviewed the 'Manager' (The young head Lama being in Tibet studying), the other Lamas who also were present belonging to the Monastery immediately said that their older monks did remember an Englishmen being injured and brought to their Monastery and that some MSS [manuscripts] were shown to him."

This account was given in the 'PS' section of a diary entry for the 'Moravian Mission' who had in the rest of the entry tried to discredit and write of the St Issa scroll.

This translated diary entry is now well known and documented in several books on Jesus in India.

In addition Dr Fida Hassnain during his own enquiries in to the scrolls spoke to people at the monastry who talked about both Notovitch's visit and the scrolls. So was he really there? The anwers appears to be a resounding Yes.

The photo of the pages of the diary was made in 1958 by the journalist Mrs. Amlabai Ketkar. Mrs. Ketkar brought the photograph from the Moravian Mission house in Leh/Ladakh, got it translated into English, and furnished copies, along with her comments, to Mr. Aziz Kashmiri.
